Laura is a septuagenarian of Jewish background whose grandson has married an African-American woman named Lavinia; Lavinia is pregnant, and so Laura will soon have a great-grandchild of mixed race.

LAURA'S STORY takes place in the late summer/early fall of 2020 during the Pandemic and following the murder of George Floyd on Memorial Day that spring.

Laura has hardly been entirely clueless about African-American history, but, boy, does she have a lot to learn...

Historical and fictional characters are a part of "Laura's Story," as she strives to figure out how she can be the best great-grandmother to the newest member of her family.

Starring Linda Benning -- but only TODAY(!) and Maxine Levaren (on MONDAY, 12/1 at 6PM!) and Featuring Nicki Barnes, Jon Alexander Hewitt, Walter Murray, myself, Rebecca Joy Fletcher (but only MONDAY) and Jena Joyce -- JUST THIS Afternoon...!!... 🌟

LINDA BENNING writes, "Theatre has been an important part of my life since I was very young. I loved to sing, so most of my early shows were musicals, many of which my daughter and I did together.

"I attended UCLA, where I majored in English and minored in Theatre; completing a Teaching Credential. The majority of my teaching career --30 years-- was at Coronado High School, where I taught English, Government, Economics, and Theatre.

"In the 1990's I was one of the co-founders of the Coronado School of the Arts [CoSA], where I taught Theatre History, Scene Study, and Show Biz Business, and was the Director of the CoSA Repertory Company, a student-driven group that performed two student-written and directed plays a year.

"Following my retirement in 2010, I gradually eased my way back on stage after a very long hiatus. It is wonderful to be performing again!" 💖

JENA JOYCE is Jena is pleased to make her second appearance with La Jolla Theatre Ensemble, having played multiple roles in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” in Love-15: Fifteen Short Plays about Tennis – and Life…!...

A Staged Reading of a new play by Michael Eichler, ACROSS THE STREET. ⭐️

https://www.facebook.com/events/1104241518575841

"Michael Eichler's plays present flawed and fascinating characters who grapple with issues of relevance. He cuts to the raw truth and leaves the audience thinking long after the lights go down." ~ Cecelia Kouma, Executive Director, Playwrights Project

ACROSS THE STREET is about many things, especially generational/cultural differences in 21st century America but also contrasts between different parts of the country, and even different NEIGHBORHOODS within certain communities.

And of course I can't give anything away(!), but look out for a highly significant plot development well into the second half of the 70- to 75-minute play -- one which, as any good play DOES, not only raises the stakes for the characters, but also introduces additional "issues"/thought-provoking material... 💜

STARRING Greta Chan, Dana Hooley, Walter Murray, and Jackson Wright...!!!!... ✨

DANA HOOLEY has been acting professionally for more than four decades; she has appeared on stage in San Diego, Los Angeles, NYC, and London.

Last decade she played Betty in "Chapatti" in Palm Springs (DezArt Performs), Sonia in "Vanya, Sonia, Masha and Spike" (Scripps Ranch Theatre), Winnie in Beckett’s "Happy Days" (Sledgehammer Theatre), and Mistress Quickly in "Henry V" and Meg in "The Birthday Party" (New Fortune Theatre Company), the latter for which she won the San Diego Critics Circle Best Supporting Actress in a Play; Dana received the San Diego Critics Circle’s Actress of the Year in 2014.

With the La Jolla Theatre Ensemble Dana has acted in staged readings of "The Laramie Project," "The Clearing," "The Ultimate Shakespeare Proof" by the late Gary Seger, and "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof," in which she played Big Mama.

In addition to being in the plays of Tennessee Williams, she dreams of performing in anything by Lillian Hellman, Eugene O'Neil, and, of course, Shakespeare! ❣️

WALTER MURRAY has appeared on stages in San Diego, Los Angeles, and New York. He was a co-founder of the San Diego Black Ensemble Theater and has been in three films, "Your Name Here," "The Case Regarding Joan of Arc," and "Why the Nativity."

Walter has performed in staged readings with the La Jolla Theatre Ensemble of "Mr. Rickey Calls A Meeting," "Rounding Third," "In Splendid Error," "Love-15: Fifteen Short Plays about Tennis – and Life(!)," and "Permanent Collection."

He also was in a full production of the latter in 2009 with John Tessmer with Mo’olelo Performing Arts Company. In 2023 Walter acted in "Public Enemy" with New Fortune Theatre Company, with which he also appeared in "Henry V" with Dana Hooley & John Tessmer in 2014. 💖
