Composer Spotlight ✨ We’re excited to perform the world premiere of Akari Komura’s Nee Commission work “outgrowth.”

Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Komura is currently a Ph.D. composition student at UC San Diego. Her artistry draws on inspiration from the musical practices of Yoko Ono, Pauline Oliveros, and Hildegard Westerkamp.

In case you missed it: the mayor proposed defunding all arts programs by 100% in next year's budget. We can't stand by and let this happen.

We want to say thank you to everyone who has been organizing, posting, sharing information, and taking action.

Shout out to LJS&C board member Judith Enns and principal oboist Carol Rothrock for writing powerful letters that were published the Union Tribune this weekend!

Thank you Ken Herman (San Diego Story) for attending and reviewing "The Heavenly Life" this weekend!

“…we heard a dulcet oboe theme in the movement’s beginning intoned by Principal Oboe Carol Rothrock; mysterious, low murmurs followed from the horns and then another lovely cantilena played by Cynthia McGregor; a nuanced trumpet air from Ken Fitzgerald, and a spirited dance by the violin section."

"Zomorodian’s exuberant interpretation of “The Heavenly Life” emphasized the childlike wonder of Mahler’s setting, a bubbling melodic excursion that benefitted from Zomodorian’s gleaming yet sweet declamation and delicate phrasing. Between her verses, Patel’s gentle tempo combined with the players’ warm sonority and dancing lines sustained the magical aura the soprano so splendidly evoked."
