This was a project headed by a university student in Beijing who has a love for Shakespeare and musical theater. We will have a full interview available later this year about this project.

The beautiful part about this project is that now people in mainland China have access to the Romeo and Juliet the musical because the video is posted on the easily-accessible Chinese website "BiliBili".

We see this as a beautiful exchange between cultures. The original run of Conrad Askland's Romeo and Juliet the musical (set entirely to the original English text of William Shakespeare) premiered 2015 at the Historic Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon, WA USA.

"I Fear Too Early" - excerpt from Romeo and Juliet the musical.

This is a studio recording of the same song that appears in the R&J musical. Mercutio has finished his "Queen Mab" speech and the Montague gang makes their way to the Capulet Masquerade Ball. Romeo stays behind and sings this song - an inner dialogue about his fate.

In 2015, a little farming town near the Canadian border had the idea to do Romeo and Juliet - as a musical - using only Shakespeare's original text. This is the video of that live stage production with a full musical theater cast and pit orchestra. The first time the show has ever been seen in full outside of Mount Vernon, WA. Huzzah!

Of course our Romeo Juliet musical online premiere includes the famous death scene in the tomb, the RJ balcony scene, the Queen Mab speech and so many other great lyric moments from William Shakespeare's original script. But now set to musical theater!
