Every year I see hundreds and even thousands of “good enough” work, but rarely anything that knocks my socks off. Once a baseline quality standard has been established I ask myself; “did I learn something?” If the answer is no then your book is automatically rejected 🙅. If your book brings nothing to the table it is a waste of time. “Thank you, next.” Please, please, please! If there is one thing all of you mfa graduates need to understand it is that it doesn’t matter how groundbreaking your practice is if your practice is just regurgitating better writers ideas without iterating.
Please share this with someone who is trying to get their work out in the world to save them some time.

Simply put, a sentence is an idea. A sentence should only grow in complexity to match the complexity of the idea it is expressing. Punctuation, like commas, colons, semicolons and dashes allow you to express two ideas together; collaging and juxtaposing to create a meaning that otherwise could never be expressed. Remember, what makes a sentence overly complex is when the grammar is trying to express more than the idea. This tells the reader not to take your idea seriously as it demonstrates your lack of clarity and understanding.

The most common grammar mistake I see is improper use of the semicolon. Using this elegant mark allows you to express more complex ideas than with just a comma and period. Combining a colon and comma a semicolon lives in two worlds; allowing your sentence to float two related ideas together.
“The semicolon (or semi-colon) is simply a break in a sentence that is stronger than a comma but not as final as a full stop.

By using the semicolon you can avoid overuse of the comma. Semicolons are especially useful for separating items in a list or linking two closely related statements.”

People ask me all the time when they should start writing a book. The answer is when they have something to say! The opposite is also true (especially in the art book space); people make art that doesn’t say anything. John Baldissari has a famous artwork about this phenomena; why is it that when you point at something people only stare at your finger instead of what you are pointing at?
