This Sunday join us to celebrate the Scholastic Awards Ceremony from 2-3 in Schaffer Auditorium!

Over 650 pieces of artwork from creative teens are being exhibited in the Sharadin's Miller Gallery as part of the Scholastic Art Awards competition. Creative teens in grades 7-12 from Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, and Northampton counties were juried into this highly competitive program. The Gold Key winners from our region will go on to compete with students across the country and winners will be featured at an exhibition in NYC and ceremony at Carnegie Hall this spring.

This year marks 100 years of this program created by the Scholastic Book Company in 1923. It is the longest running and most prestigious art competition in the country. KU is now the organizer and host for our region.

The exhibition is open early, starting Thursday Feb 8 and on display through March 5. Gallery hours are Saturdays 12-4pm, Sundays, 2-4pm, Mon-Friday 10am-4pm. The awards ceremony honoring the students, families, and teachers is Sunday March 5, from 2-3pm.

THESE ONES ARE GOING TO GROW BIG SOMEDAY

Berdis’ work uses a childlike inquiry to imagine what a q***r ghost would look like. By reflecting on the history of the AIDS memorial quilt, and considering artists and activists lost to acts of violence, he creates a new world and envisions a safe space for the viewer and himself. Through joy and play, Berdis uses textile processes to create a cast of characters that live on in this world. The duality of joy and sorrow ask the viewer : are these characters friend or foe?

Berdis has been meeting with classes and clubs during his residency and will be returning on November 19 for the KU Art Education Conference to lead a workshop with local art teachers.

Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, Berdis received his BFA from Slippery Rock University in 2013. In 2016, he was awarded the opportunity to study at Tyler School of Art in the Fibers & Material Studies Department. Eric has gone on to receiving his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Eric has had solo exhibitions at Random Access Gallery, in Syracuse, New York, Practice Gallery Philadelphia, Bunker Projects, Pittsburgh and Project 1612 in Peoria, Illinois, and most recently the University Galleries at Illinois State University.
