Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center

Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center 200 North Huntington Street, Kosciusko, MS The structure served as the First Presbyterian Church of Kosciusko from 1899 to 1984.

The Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 and designated a Mississippi Landmark in 1995. The Victorian-American-type stained-glass windows are exceptionally noteworthy and are dedicated to some of the 1890 stalwarts of the community. Mary Ricks Thornton spearheaded a community drive to reactivate the Kosciusko-Attala Historical Society a

nd purchase the old church for its headquarters. The group purchased the property for $80,000 in 1987. The facility is now used for meetings of the historical society and can be used for weddings, club programs, recitals, lectures, etc.

The Attala Historical Society will kick off its America 250 Lecture series Tuesday, June 2 at 6:00 PM at the Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center. William “Brother” Rogers will present LEARNING MISSISSIPPI HISTORY THROUGH HISTORICAL MARKERS.

From traditional green historical markers to the Mississippi Blues Trail, Freedom Trail, Country Music Trail, and Mississippi Mound Trail, the state’s history is told along its roads. The speaker takes a fun romp through history that will interest anyone who likes fascinating trivia about the state.

“Brother” Rogers has served as the director of the Programs and Communication Division of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History before retiring in 2025. From 1990 to 2016, he was the associate director of the John C. Stennis Center for Public Service in Starkville, Mississippi.
