IndyCar helmet sci-fi vibes from race day weekend.

A few moments of downtime as we exit the madness at the end of school for my girls.

Nearing the end of term. The student's work output is incredible.

Here is an in-class demo: a paint-over of a hilariously bad maquette. Even rough as it is, there are great shapes of light and shadow that can be mined from the reference.

My TA said it kind of looked like a dinosaur, so we ran with that. Some kind of elderly reptilian king.

My contribution to this year’s

Once again, my daughter Evy gets her top film pick—Avatar.

Thank you again Lodge Design, for your efforts in putting on the show.

It is a real treat to get a night out with my wife and have a great event to reconnect with dear friends, colleagues, and former students who have moved on to bring their own special voices into the world.

I recently learned about a prompt called , and I just love the idea.

I'm using it as an excuse to pull some more tractor bots from the archives. Midwest Sci-Fi lives on 🙂

Thanks, , for such a fun idea.

*and thanks to for bringing it to my attention. (Check out his astoundingly cool hard-surface modeling of machines)

'Rend the Heavens'

This past weekend, my daughter and I attended with the teens of

We arrived a bit late, but just in time to capture this quote at the start of the message by@keirstynworden . Setting a tone of reverence and expectation. So many had powerful encounters with the Holy Spirit, including my sweet girl on Saturday night.

"Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down,
that the mountains would tremble before you!
As when fire sets twigs ablaze
and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name known to your enemies
and cause the nations to quake before you!
For when you did awesome things that we did not expect,
you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him."

from Isaiah 64

A small thumbnail/color demo from last term. The students were working on a concept for a National Parks poster. We discussed creating notans and why simplification of shapes and values matters. It's a concept that you constantly have to refer back to—it's always relevant.

This image is from Zion National Park. My wife and I visited it a couple of times when we were first married. We climbed with some very competent friends. We were adventurous... and extremely naive.

The last slides are from Pine Creek Canyon in 2008. The last rappel is 100ft. Joanna and I went down it simultaneously on 200ft of rope. Joanna's smile says it all—a mix of bravery and terror.
