Canadian Horse Slaughter Statistics
January to June 2026
The 2026 second quarter horse slaughter figures have been released by Agriculture and Agri Food Canada, covering the period from January through June.
The data present a mixed picture.
Exports of horse meat continued to decline, and shipments of live horses to Japan fell slightly compared to the same period last year.
However, there was a substantial rise in the number of horses exported by the United States for slaughter that is both disappointing and deeply concerning.

Compared to the same time period last year:
⬇️ Live Horse Exports for Slaughter: 1,380 horses, which represents a 0.6% decrease (down from 1,389 horses during the same time period in 2025)
⬆️ US Horse Imports for Slaughter: 2,411 horses, up 71.8% (1,403 were exported to Canada from the US in 2025).
⬇️ Horse Meat Exports: 543 metric tonnes, an 18.5% decrease (down from 666 metric tonnes in 2025)
