Charleston kicks have always been an integral part of Lindy Hop! This evening we'll start both level 1 AND level 2 Charleston. For this month you may want to ditch the leather soled shoes and wear more comfortable clothing.

Charleston - Level 1 Swing Series will jump start with the basic, some variation options, and getting into open Charleston shapes. This series is for anyone who feels comfortable social dancing!

Charleston - Level 2 Swing Series will play with options for getting in and out of tandem and workshopping our s-turns. This series is for dancers who have already taken a Level 1 Charleston series and feel comfortable switching between Charleston and triple step rhythms.

Yesterday was World Lindy Hop Day and Frankie Manning's birthday!

This evening we'll finish our Frankie's Favorites series in level 1 and 2 and then play many of the songs Frankie loved throughout the evening.

Frankie Manning was one of the earliest swing dancers and his passion and joy were infectious to everyone around him. It's likely many of us wouldn't be dancing at all if Frankie hadn't danced and so we celebrate his legacy and joy on his birthday every May 26.

“So what’s the scene in Knoxville like?” A friend asked me that at a dance event a while back. I told him: “It’s small but tight-knit. We have several great dancers.”

He then shared that his scene doesn’t spend time together outside of dance. That really threw me for a loop and broke my image of what I thought every scene was like. “You don’t hang out outside of dance???” We do that multiple times a week. Naturally, I thought every scene was like that.

The truth is, outside-of-dance hang outs require effort to organize just like the weekly dances. It takes schedule-comparing, group chatting, doing a thing without knowing if anyone will show, and sometimes even an accidental or inevitable overlap of plans.

Building connections within a scene can be messy because not everyone will vibe with each other or be available to join the fun. But that’s the art of a tight-knit scene: you meet people where they’re at. And the result is worth the effort. Because I couldn’t imagine not knowing everyone in your scene— not knowing each person at least a little bit.
