I had no idea how much I would actually end up loving the color in these. When my client first came to me asking to start this leg sleeve I agreed because most of it was going to be in black and grey with just a few flowers in color. But I ended up really enjoying doing these, and now we're planning a massive full color piece later this year that I'm so excited about.

Since I did this in February I've been considering SLOWLY transitioning into color. I won't be taking on color projects often yet because I know they take me a lot of time to prepare and design, and they are still a lot for me. But now I know that if I really put in the time and care into it that I need I can make something I'm really happy with.

I feel like this opens up a lot of possibilities for me and my style to grow, and I can't wait to see where it takes me in years to come. 😊

This was such an interesting piece to design! I love the challenge of learning to draw new subjects, especially when I'm going for a semi realistic look. For this one I collected references of horse anatomy to learn the muscle structure. What a weird and wonderful life I have.

When this client came to me asking to start a gallery wall sleeve with these images I had no idea what to expect

there was so much meaning behind it all!

I thought it was just a creative design choice, but she chose ornate frames because of how much she loves her job working in a frame shop. The pet portrait is of her dog that she's had for many years. She told me wonderful stories of him being a diva. I didn't know at first but the lily and leaf is a reference from a show. Another surprise, if you know you know. 😉

Aesthetically I loved this tattoo because it feels like an art gallery, and because I love tattooing small details. I also love being surprised with meaning that I didn't expect, from the show reference to the frames.

This piece has a deeper meaning than expected.

She was a past client that reached out with a new idea: birth flowers for her loved ones. She knew she wanted it to wrap a bit around the shoulder and drape down the front, and gave me the trust to freehand a large portion so I could draw it right on her to fit the natural flow of her body.

Did you know that copying pieces from the old masters is a great way to grow as an artist? In the tattoo industry it's a thrilling challenge to recreate art on skin. But even as drawing or painting practice it's used to help you see through the artists eyes and understand WHY they created the piece the way they did. In this one I found the way they shaded the muscle structure very interesting, and I feel like it opened up a new way to see contour/lighting!
