🎨 Art Materials Tip: Invest in Good Brushes

Many beginning artists focus on paints and paper first, but one of the best investments you can make is a quality set of brushes.

A good brush holds its shape, carries paint more evenly, and gives you better control over every stroke. Whether you're learning watercolor, acrylic, or oil painting, quality brushes can make techniques easier to learn and more enjoyable to practice.

The best part? With proper care, a well-made brush can last for years, making it one of the most cost-effective tools in your art kit.

🖌️ Quick Brush Care Tips:
• Clean brushes immediately after use
• Avoid leaving brushes standing in water
• Reshape bristles before drying
• Store them flat or upright once dry

Great art doesn't require the most expensive supplies—but having reliable tools can make the creative process smoother and more rewarding.

🎨 What's the oldest brush in your collection?

This past weekend, we gathered to honor two individuals whose dedication to the arts helped shape the Fountain City Art Center and the community it serves.

The Fountain City Art Center was formally dedicated in honor of Sylvia B. Williams, and the Heather Fielden Memorial Garden was dedicated in loving memory of Heather Fielden.

The morning was filled with gratitude, memories, and fellowship as friends, family members, artists, volunteers, and supporters came together to celebrate lives devoted to creativity, education, and community.

We are especially thankful to the many volunteers and community partners who helped bring the memorial garden to life and to everyone who joined us for this meaningful occasion.

Their contributions to the arts continue to inspire artists, students, and visitors who walk through our doors each day.

Thank you to all who helped make this special day possible.

Art isn't about perfection. It's about paying attention.

Every line begins with observation. Every painting begins with noticing.

When we slow down long enough to truly look—at light, color, shape, texture, and the world around us—we discover that art is less about creating something perfect and more about learning to see.

At Fountain City Art Center, students of all ages and experience levels gather to practice that skill. Through drawing, painting, and creative exploration, we learn to pay attention—to the subject, to the process, and sometimes even to ourselves.

The result isn't perfection.

It's growth, confidence, connection, and creativity.

What have you noticed lately that made you stop and look a little longer?

Why Art Matters in Education

When people think about education, they often think about reading, writing, mathematics, and science. These subjects are essential, but so is art.

Art teaches students how to observe the world more carefully. It encourages them to slow down, pay attention to details, and think critically about what they see. Whether a student is drawing a still life, mixing colors, or creating an original piece, they are learning problem-solving skills that extend far beyond the art room.

Art also helps develop confidence. Every blank page can feel intimidating at first. Learning to begin, make mistakes, adjust, and continue is a valuable life skill. Through art, students discover that growth often comes through practice rather than perfection.

Creativity is another important part of education. The ability to think independently, generate ideas, and approach challenges from different perspectives is valuable in every field. Art gives students opportunities to explore their imagination while learning how to bring ideas into reality.

Perhaps most importantly, art provides a way for students to express themselves. Not every thought, feeling, or experience can be communicated through words. Art offers another language—one that allows students to explore their identity, share their perspective, and connect with others.

At Fountain City Art Center, we believe art is more than an extracurricular activity. It is an important part of a well-rounded education that nurtures curiosity, confidence, discipline, and creative thinking.

The skills developed through art don't stay in the classroom. They become tools that students carry with them throughout their lives.

Creativity matters. Expression matters. Art matters.

One of the things we love most about our Homeschool Art Program is watching students discover what they're capable of.

Art isn't just about learning to draw or paint. It's about learning to observe more carefully, solve problems creatively, take risks, and develop confidence in your own ideas.

Some students arrive convinced they "aren't artistic." A few weeks later, they're experimenting with new techniques, sharing their work, and surprising themselves with what they can create.

In a world that often moves very quickly, art offers something different. It teaches patience, attention, imagination, and the joy of making something with your own hands.

We're grateful to provide a space where homeschool students can explore, create, and grow alongside other young artists in our community.

One of the most important skills an artist can develop is learning how to truly see.

In our Youth Art Classes, students practice breaking complex subjects into simple shapes, studying proportion, and building confidence through observation and drawing exercises.

These foundational skills help young artists create stronger artwork in every medium they explore.
