Here we have a barn owl among an abstract patch of daisies, blanketed in mountain mist and bathed in early morning sunrise.

I have to say, I LOVE IT, however, the choice to keep the daises more wallpaper-pattern like became quite the point of contention. I got flamed for this choice 😂

but what do you think?

Purrsistence through adversity.
That’s Fortuna’s story. 🐟

Mei discovered her lying in a road while visiting Japan, covered in fleas with both eyes swollen shut. Realizing that if she didn’t stop, Fortuna was destined to become roadkill, Mei ran out and scooped her up.

After some tender care and “blind luck,” she made a full recovery, minus one eye. 👁️

Now living in Australia 🇦🇺 and affectionately called “Chuna,” 🐟 she spends her days communicating with her owners and harassing the local wildlife through an assortment of feral chirps and squeaks because, for whatever reason, she doesn’t meow. :3

Apparently, one eye is plenty. KEEP going ✊🏿

People (and pets) overcome extraordinary odds every day to have what they want. One eye is enough to make things happen. And if you don’t have ANY eyes, THEN USE YOUR EARS. Nothing worth having comes easy.

Now, lemme introduce you to the PRECIOUS one-eyed tabby from Japan affectionately called ‘CHUNA’, but legally named ‘Fortuna’. 🐟

She was a pet, she just didn’t know it yet. Her Australian owners found her on a road in Japan, completely blind. After some tender care and “blind luck” 😬 she recovered, but with one eye ONLY.

Then they said 🇦🇺 “g’day, mate” 👁️

and whisked her away to her forever home. She happily lives out her days down under 🦘 squeaking and chirping at unsuspecting BIRDS visiting her yard.

Sometimes the goal isn’t just to catch a likeness, but to hold onto a feeling that words can’t quite reach.

This was one of those pivotal pieces for me back when I painted it for solo show. 🔥

I was under extreme pressure 💎 to meet a deadline, so, naturally we find ways to be efficient without sacrificing quality.

I leaned heavy into thick texture to stand in for literal detail, and let a lot of the toned panel come through to fill out the comp with GLOW. 🔥

I SAY 🧐 If you need to improve, or elevate your style, just commit to a show and procrastinate most of the time that you should be creating 😬

You’re almost done… and you see just one spot. Or ten. THAT NOBODY ELSE WILL CARE ABOUT, but you keep going anyway 😂

TRUTH IS, after 70-80% we’re in diminishing returns territory, PULL THE PLUG. 🔌

I tell myself that all the time, it’s even written on my easel, staring back at me in between layers as a constant reminder, and while I’ve gotten much MUCH better at not overworking pieces, it still happens. 💀 not in the sense that it ruins the art, but strictly in the sense that the time would be better spent elsewhere.

But here’s the upside: being raised with parents who were hyper-critical in some respects gave me an obsessive eye that translates beautifully into detail and depth. Hardship gave me a tool, and I get to turn it into art. 🎨
