Please join us in welcoming Dr. Sara Beth Carroll, who has been selected as the new Head Director for the Farragut High School Choral Program!

Dr. Carroll is an energetic music educator who is passionate about vocal music and engaging with students. She comes to Farragut from The University of Tennessee, where she served as Director of Admissions and Student Success for the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. Prior to her move with her family to the South in 2022, Dr. Carroll was a high school choral director in Washington State. Dr. Carroll directed classical choirs and jazz choirs, taught class piano, developed and taught a special education music class, and served as musical director for school musicals. Before her teaching tenure in Eastern Washington, Dr. Carroll worked as an Advising and Recruiting Specialist for the Department of Music at Central Washington University, her alma mater.

Dr. Carroll holds a Doctor of Music Education from Liberty University, a Master of Science in Public Administration from Central Washington University, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Central Washington University. She earned membership in several honor societies throughout her collegiate pursuits, including Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Omega Nu Lambda, and served as an officer in several collegiate organization chapters, including the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), and the National Association for Teachers of Singing (NATS). She has been an active musician throughout her professional life, singing in symphony choirs, chamber ensembles, opera choruses, vocal jazz ensembles, and church music ministry. Here in Knoxville, Dr. Carroll is an active member of the Knoxville Choral Society, singing in both the large choral ensemble and the select chamber chorale.

Dr. Carroll enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, exploring coffee shops, staying active, attending musicals and concerts, singing in choir, serving at church, and listening to podcasts and audiobooks. She also enjoys cheering on the Volunteers!

Please help us welcome Dr. Carroll to the FHS community!

Ireland Day 6 - We spent our final full day in Ireland traveling to the beautiful town of Kilkenny! We toured the city for a few hours, had lunch on the town, and then had a chance to tour the famous Kilkenny Castle. Dinner was back in Dublin at Nancy Hand’s Pub, and afterwards we said goodbye to the best bus driver/tour guide ever - Brendan! In true program fashion, we sent him off with a group hug!

Tomorrow will be a travel day back to the US for many of us, while a few will continue on through Ireland/Europe. We hope for safe and easy travels for all!

We’re sad to see such an incredible trip come to an end, but we are so thankful for all of the support that helped make this dream a reality! It has truly been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it wouldn’t have happened without the incredible community that has shown up to support this program. Thank you!

Ireland Day 5 - Today was the big day - the performance at St. Patrick’s Cathedral!

We woke up early, and drove from Galway back to Dublin. We went straight to St. Patrick’s Cathedral where the singers performed a recital for a very supportive crowd of visitors from all across the world! It was truly a special opportunity!

Afterwards, we had a quick lunch followed by a city tour and a visit to Trinity College. We toured the Book of Kells and library, before enjoying a few rainy (and at times hail-y!) hours exploring the city. We ended the night with a unique dining experience at the Harbour Master Bar and Restaurant!

Tomorrow will be our final full day in Ireland!

Ireland Day 4 - Tonight was the performance for the Galway Choral Festival! We started the day with free time around the city center, where we could explore and eat lunch at our leisure. Students then went to their final rehearsal in the performance space, and afterwards we had dinner at John Keough’s Pub. Before the performance, we snapped some pictures of our group outside of the performance venue, the Galway Cathedral!

This has been an incredible musical experience, with students performing Elaine Hagenberg’s masterwork “Illuminare” conducted by TTU’s own Dr. Zamer, and also a performing onf of Hagenberg’s pieces “You Do Not Walk Alone” which she rehearsed and conducted! Over the last three days, our students were able to engage with both directors, ask questions, and learn more about the process of getting music from brain to page to performance.

We are so proud of these students for what they brought to this experience!

Wish us luck tomorrow as we head to Dublin for our very own performance in St. Patrick’s Cathedral!

Ireland Day 3 - We began the day with a drive through the countryside to the famous Cliffs of Moher! On the return trip, we took the coastal route and stopped at some incredible rock formations along the ocean. Once back in town, we had a delicious dinner at Kirby’s of Cross Street, followed by our final rehearsal. Tomorrow, we will perform at the Galway Choral Festival in the beautiful Galway Cathedral!

Ireland Day 2 - We had two great rehearsals with Dr. Zamer and composer Elaine Hagenberg in the picturesque town of Clifden! Between rehearsals, we took a trip to Kylemore Abbey where we toured the grounds and gave a quick recital in the Monastic Church. We lucked out with fantastic sunny weather today, and are keeping our fingers crossed for more tomorrow when we visit the Cliffs of Moher!
