Genevieve Mizzell Fiber Arts Welcome to my page, where I have done my best to document my fifty years of adventures with crochet! Moved to the Outer Banks of NC. Moved to Wi******er, Va. com.

I learned how to crochet in the late seventies, when I walked into a yarn store in a Chicago suburb, bought some yarn, and was given some basic crochet instruction. The colors and textures of the yarns thrilled me, and I’ve been crocheting ever since. Soon after that momentous event, I attended a spinning workshop in the Michigan countryside, and added handspinning to my repertoire. Making my own y

arn was just as exciting, and I continue to spin many of my own yarns, using different fibers, including dog and cat hair. Following is a history of my adventures in crochet and fiber art. Late 70’s to early 80’s: Moved to Charlottesville, Va., where I maintained a working studio at McGuffey Art Center for about five years. Participated in many shows in the C’ville area and elsewhere on the East Coast. These included Winter Fair in Baltimore, Md., an ACC juries show, and the Philadelphia Museum Arts and Crafts Fair, also a juried show. Through the Junior League of C’ville., I did a residency at local high schools. In 2980, I had a residency at Art Park, in Lewiston, NY, where I demonstrated crochet and spinning at Niagara Falls.

1984 to 2010. Joined Dare County Arts Council ( DCAC) and participated in numerous DCAC shows and exhibits.Awarded Honorable Mentions at both the Frank Stick and Molly Fearing art shows. Took part in “Artrageous” art show events, and helped to make “ A Restaurant By George” into a big bayou for a Terrance Simien Zydeco event. Joined the Crochet Guild of America’s ( CGOA) as a charter member, and was awarded the “ Wearable Art” first class award at the Fourth Annual Chain Link Crochet Conference in Chicago in 1997. In 2000, three of my hats were accepted into the Chain Reaction traveling art show, sponsored by the Textile Arts Center of Chicago and the CGOA. Continued to do local shows.

2010 to 2020. Had a popup shop/ studio for one year at the Bright Box Center on the downtown asking mall, courtesy owner, Marilyn Finnemore. Exhibited in shows with the Wi******er Art Market ( WAM). Win first place booth at the 2010 Apple Blossom “ Art In The Park” fair. Had a one person show with the Dare County Arts Council in Nags Head, N.C. , titled “The Rad Hatter”. Was part of a three person show at the Festival Park Gallery, On Roanoke Island, N.C. Had a one week residency on Ocracoke Island, N.C., teaching high school students how to spin and crochet. Attended the 2018 CGOA conference in Portland, Oregon, and modeled two of my headpieces students their fashion show. I’ve been going through some boxes of photos, trying to find a few more of my early spinning and crocheting days, and came across this one. Tim was my old bf, ( another one that didn’t work out!)who I had met when in college at Tulane in New Orleans. After I had lived briefly in the Chicago area, close to where my family had relocated from Larchmont, NY, Tim and I lived for awhile in a cottage owned by his grandparents on Shavehead Lake in Michigan. That is where I was living when I took a two day workshop from a nearby spinner, and fell in love with spinning my own yarn to crochet with. It is also where I fell in love with flea markets and auctions. Madly in love, with a passion that continues to this day. ( Unlike the romance!😂😬)This was the late 60’s, early 70’s. Nearby was the , which covered many acres of vendor booths, a live auction of both antiques and livestock( pigs, as I recall), and includes an Amish restaurant with memorable buckwheat pancakes, homemade maple syrup, and sausages. Heaven, which still goes on to this day!! Anyway, I bought this spinning wheel, my first, at the live auction, for very little money.I don’t remember how much, but I do remember that I didn’t have much, so it had to be an amazing deal! It had old orange paint on it, and my mother helped me take the old paint off and refinish it. It was a little wobbly, but it worked, and was a step up from the drop spindle I’d been using. I used this wheel for quite some time, until I eventually upgraded to an Ashford, which was more efficient. It sure was pretty, though!!❤️

Back to the beginning again, my sister recently found this picture, taken in the early 70’s, of me at my parents’ home in the Chicago area, wearing a hat, scarf, and mitten combo that I had crocheted out of wool that I had spun myself, on a drop spindle. Early days as a fiber artist!! I learned how to crochet by just stopping by a yarn store, where I was mesmerized by the colors and the textures, purchasing some yarn, and getting a few lessons in how to use it. I was totally hooked, pun intended! After that, I taught myself how to read patterns and how to make various stitches, which is really how I learned almost everything I needed to continue my passion until this very day, always experimenting!! My crochet library is quite extensive now, and I still go to it for inspiration and instruction. 📚

I had a little crocheted piece ready to slip into the collection at the # at # but it took us so long to figure out how to charge the electric car we were driving that we had to skip that and drive through the desert straight to our main destination, the # in ! It’s the greatest little cowboy/girl establishment ever, where everyone dances and everyone feels at home! By the time we got there, we only had an hour, but it was worth it!!❤️💃

Skipping way ahead to where I am now, this is the latest piece I’ve entered in the esteemed and beloved “ Molly Fearing Annual Memorial Art Show sponsored by Dare Arts, which opened yesterday. Because they’re so festive and I love Top Hats, I’ve decided to make a series of them, for fun and frivolity. This one “To The Ball” is the second of the “ Carnival Crowns” collection. More details of this hat to come! #

Well, my detailed “ about” section never turned back up, and so it’s taken me awhile to get up the psychic energy to begin reprising my 50+ years of crochet again… so sorry for my disappearance! I’ll start again, but maybe in a less detailed, more piecemeal fashion. For example, I’ll probably omit the five pages on how to and why I spin dog hair, thrilling though it was!! I don’t have too many pics of those early days in the first part of the 70’s, when I was in my early 20’s, but this one is a gem from our Chicago days. My brother, Champ, is standing next to our sister, Julie , who is modeling one of my early “hippie hats” made of crocheted stars. Next is a somewhat sappy looking me, looking like I might have had some part in cooking that big old turkey in front of us, and then our grandmother, “Bobo”, who most certainly would have had a major part in it, even if it was by offering TONS of advice!!
