Dear Friends,

I recently announced that the First Acoustics November 3rd concert with Joe Crookston will be our last. After much thought, we reluctantly decided that it is time to end our series. I have been asked why the series is ending. I would love to say that it is because Bruce and I are moving on to some new adventures, but the truth is that we are closing because we have not been able to successfully build an audience here in Kingston NY. The combination of the pandemic and our relocation from Brooklyn separated us from our loyal fans at a time when people were reconsidering how they would spend their entertainment time and money. We can no longer present concerts without the expectation that we will be able to draw an audience large enough to cover the considerable expense of the performers. Many of the artists with whom we work have been willing to appear regardless of the size of the audience or how much we would be able to pay them. We can no longer, in good conscience, ask them to do that.

The responses to our announcement have been more than heartwarming. Many of you have told me how much First Acoustics has meant to you. Sharing memories of our sixteen years together has been an unexpected and delightful diversion from the sadness of having to share this news.

We are looking forward to celebrating the wonderful times that we have shared, bringing artists and audiences together for the magic that can only happen in the presence of live music in an intimate setting. I want to express my gratitude to the musicians, volunteers, donors, and audience members who have been with us on this joyous journey.

I hope you will join us for one or both of our last two shows. Tret Fure and Special Guest, Lisa Klotz, will be with us on Sunday, October 13th, and we will take a final bow with Joe Crookston on November 3rd.

Deidre McCalla (she/her) - a Black woman, mother, le***an, feminist - has long been in the forefront of Black musicians expanding the understanding of how Black folk can do folk. Deidre is riding high on her current release ENDLESS GRACE which dominated the June 2022 Folk Radio Charts as the #1 Album with the #1 Song - Shoulder To The Wheel and the #3 Song - I Do Not Walk This Path Alone, and finished for the year as the #13 Top Album on FAI Folk Radio. PopMatters, Rhythms Magazine, and the Folk Alley Listener Favorite’s Poll ranked ENDLESS GRACE among the 10 Best Folk Albums for 2022. In 2023 Deidre’s song Shoulder To The Wheel won the 19th Annual International Acoustic Music Award for Best Folk/Americana/Roots song.

Deidre learned at an early age that life begins with an acoustic guitar and her songwriting reveals an unyieldingly honest perspective expressed with a lyric touch that relentlessly celebrates the power and diversity of the human spirit.
