EQUAL OPPORTUNITY.

Two words that seem fundamental to the American promise.

When even the language of equality becomes controversial, what then?

In Dirty Words and Other Things, A Gang of Three confronts the political forces shaping what can be discussed, acknowledged, and remembered.

Through redacted language and interactive elements, the exhibition invites us to reconsider the relationship between words and power.

Because when language disappears, the ideas behind it risk disappearing from public conversation too.

GENDER.

Language shapes how we understand ourselves and one another. When certain words become targets for removal from public discourse, what happens?

Who gets to define what can be said? And whose experiences risk being left out?

In Dirty Words and Other Things, A Gang of Three explores the relationship between language, political power, and censorship through an installation that asks visitors to look more closely at what is being erased and why.

Some words are more powerful than they appear.

CULTURAL HERITAGE.

When the language we use to describe our history, identity, and shared experiences becomes politically contested…what gets erased? And who gets to decide?

In Dirty Words and Other Things, artists William H. Dodge and Lincoln Hancock, working as A Gang of Three, examine the growing restrictions on language within American public institutions and what those restrictions reveal about power and censorship.

Originally conceived for the Malta Biennale, the project was itself canceled before it could be realized. Now it comes to One Mile Gallery.

What happens when we stop talking about climate change?

For A Gang of Three, art is a way of making the invisible visible and asking questions about the forces shaping our environment and our future.

Their Alluvial Decoder project explores our relationship to the environment through an interdisciplinary approach combining public art, landscape, design, and social engagement.

Now, as part of their exhibition Dirty Words and Other Things at One Mile Gallery, artists William H. Dodge and Lincoln Hancock are revisiting questions around climate, language, and the political forces that determine what can and cannot be discussed.

Through an installation incorporating viewfinders, the artists invite visitors to look more closely at ideas and language being pushed out of civic discourse and how the words we need to describe our world begin to disappear.

MEET THE ARTISTS: A GANG OF THREE

William H. Dodge and Lincoln Hancock are the North Carolina-based artists and designers behind A Gang of Three, the internationally recognized multidisciplinary practice coming to One Mile Gallery this Saturday.

Working at the intersection of art, architecture, landscape, urban planning, and social advocacy, Dodge and Hancock create projects that challenge conventional thinking and invite people to engage with the world differently.

Their work addresses some of the most pressing issues of our time, from human rights and climate change to migration, social justice, and collective memory. Along the way, they’ve earned international recognition, including honors from the World Architecture Festival, Fast Company, and the Anthem Awards, and a 2026 residency at Headlands Center for the Arts.

But why A Gang of Three when there are only two of them? The third position is intentionally left open for collaborators: artists, architects, designers, scientists, and others who bring new perspectives to each project. It’s a fitting expression of their belief that meaningful art and design emerge through dialogue and collaboration.

Their latest exhibition, Dirty Words and Other Things, explores censorship, language, and institutional power, growing out of a project originally proposed for the Malta Biennale that was itself canceled.

An art project about censorship. Canceled.

In 2025, A Gang of Three was selected to develop a project for the Malta Biennale exploring the growing censorship of language in the United States.

Then, before the work could be realized, the artists’ participation was canceled without what they considered a clear explanation.

The irony wasn’t lost on them.

Artists William H. Dodge and Lincoln Hancock continued developing the project during a residency at Headlands Center for the Arts, exploring the intersection of censorship, institutional power, and freedom of expression.

Now the project comes to Kingston.

An art project about censorship. Canceled. You really couldn’t make this up.

In 2025, artists William H. Dodge and Lincoln Hancock, collectively known as A Gang of Three, were selected to develop a project for the Malta Biennale examining censorship and the growing restrictions on language in the United States.

Then the project itself was canceled, without what the artists considered a clear explanation.

During a 2026 residency at Headlands Center for the Arts in California, the artists continued developing the project, exploring the relationship between language, institutional power, censorship, and the freedom to express ourselves.

The resulting installation, Dirty Words and Other Things, opens at One Mile Gallery on October 17.

A Gang of Three is an internationally recognized, award-winning interdisciplinary practice working across art, architecture, landscape, design, and social advocacy. Their work challenges conventional thinking and invites audiences to question the systems and assumptions that shape our world.

And why A Gang of Three when there are only two artists? The third spot is intentionally left open for collaborators, bringing new voices and perspectives into every project.

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome William and Lincoln to Kingston for an exhibition that feels especially relevant right now.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE BEN SLOAT! 🌼
FINAL DAY: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10 | 12–5 PM
After four weeks of quiet reflection, offerings, incense, and shared intentions, Prayer Can’t Just Be Asking comes to a close this Saturday at One Mile Gallery.
Ben Sloat has transformed the gallery into a space for something increasingly rare: a moment to be still, to listen, to consider the world around us, and perhaps to leave something behind.

At the heart of the installation, the luminous Guan Yin, Bodhisattva of compassion, reminds us that prayer is not simply about asking. It is also about listening, caring, and acting.

Over the course of the exhibition, visitors have contributed their thoughts, wishes, drawings, and quiet moments. Each offering has become part of something larger.

There is still time to add yours.

Enter in silence. Light an incense stick. Leave a thought or drawing. Or simply sit for a while.
Thank you, Ben, for creating such a beautiful and generous space, and to everyone who has made it their own.

ONE LAST SATURDAY. 12–5 PM.
