Fight week is in full swing ⚔️

Our fight team led a meeting last night for the participants in our 2026 SAFD workshop before they begin their week long stage combat intensive. During the day, these actors will be logging hours for their certification and during the evening we will be blocking all of our battles, skirmishes and anything that goes boom 💥

As Silas Martin so perfectly says, “We know the journey will be hard, the fight perilous. But whatever happens, it will be in service to our liberties.”

In this case, we hope the fights *look* perilous and all in service to Liberty Mountain ⛰️🇺🇸

ON THIS DAY — August 19th 1780 ⚔️🇺🇸💥

Just weeks before the Battle of Kings Mountain, another important Patriot victory unfolded in the Carolina backcountry.

On August 19, 1780, Patriot militia under the leadership of Isaac Shelby, James William, and Elijah Clarke faced a Loyalist and Provincial force at the Battle of Musgrove Mill in South Carolina.

Outnumbered, the Patriots used the landscape to their advantage, drawing the Loyalists into an ambush and securing a decisive victory.

For Shelby and Williams, the fight was far from over.

Both men would soon take up arms again as the campaign moved northward — joining the Patriot forces that pursued Major Patrick Ferguson to Kings Mountain.

Less than seven weeks later, on October 7, 1780, they would meet again in a battle that helped change the course of the American Revolution. The road to Kings Mountain was already being paved. 🇺🇸⚔️

Experience their story live onstage this fall in Liberty Mountain: The Revolutionary Drama at the Joy Theatre. Reserve your tickets today:

THREE EXTRAORDINARY HISTORICAL EXHIBITS

Thomas Kelly Pauley — “Wall of Commanders”
Renowned portrait artist Thomas Kelly Pauley www.pauleyportraits.com returns with his acclaimed portraits of the key Patriot and Loyalist commanders at Kings Mountain. The “Wall of Commanders” has been a favorite of patrons for years and a special photo opportunity for descendants of those who fought in the battle.

Charles Toppan — Jefferson's Rough Draft
New for 2026, the 1829 Charles Toppan steel engravings of Thomas Jefferson's original rough draft of the Declaration of Independence will be exhibited at the Joy. Brought by Founding Sponsors Gilbert and Jancy Patrick, the engravings preserve Jefferson's handwritten draft, including interlineations by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams.

Theodore W. Ohman — Declaration of Independence
Also on display is a 1942 Theodore W. Ohman lithographic restoration of the Declaration of Independence, donated by John B. and Sonja Houston. Ohman recreated the Declaration using an early photograph of the original parchment and the 1823 Stone engraving. Examples of his work are held by the National Archives, Library of Congress and Independence Hall.

Together, these exhibits help tell the story of American freedom — from Jefferson's words declaring independence to the Carolina patriots who fought to preserve it at Kings Mountain.
