ABOUT JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday celebrated on June 19 that commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. It specifically marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

About the Pono Project

The Pono Project is a series of live arts and culture events celebrating the diversity of the Maui community, promoting inclusion of marginalized persons, and educating on Maui’s history and challenges, bolstered by partnerships with other Maui nonprofits.

The Pono Project is supported in part by the County of Maui’s Office of Economic Development.

About the Show

Strings & Soul is an intimate Music Medicine Sessions concert featuring Tempa & Naor performing their original songs with the emotional lift of live strings.

For one night only, their soulful blend of Americana, folk, blues, and singer-songwriter storytelling will be reimagined with a beautiful ensemble of Maui string players led by Cheryl Lindley, adding warmth, depth, and cinematic beauty to the songs.

This is not a big, flashy production. It is a heartfelt evening of songs, stories, harmony, and strings, created to bring the music closer to the heart.

About Tempa & Naor

Tempa & Naor are a singer-songwriter couple that has been composing music together for 13 years. Based on Maui, Hawaii, they have been creating a unique blend of soul and folk music that speaks to the heart. Their music draws from personal experiences, weaving powerful and honest lyrics that explore themes of transformation, love, loss, and release. They believe music is medicine and they live to share it with the world.

THIS WEDNESDAY, June 10, 2026 at 7:00pm

ProArts Playhouse and Mana’o Radio present Lee DeWyze

Tickets at www.ProArtsMaui.org or 808-463-6550

Lee DeWyze emerged from Chicago’s rich music scene with a voice and songwriting shaped by intimacy, restraint, and lived experience.

After years spent honing his craft in local rooms, his work reached a national audience when he won American Idol – a moment that marked not a culmination, but a beginning.

Intent on defining himself beyond the television spotlight, DeWyze turned inward, committing fully to his roots in songwriting as both discipline, a compass, and a devotional practice. That commitment crystallized with his debut album Frames, marking the beginning of a body of work rooted in emotional honesty and nuance. Across four full-length records, DeWyze has maintained an exceptionally prolific output, cultivating a catalog that balances indie sensibility with broad emotional reach.

Equally central to his career is his reputation as a live performer. For more than fifteen years, DeWyze has toured internationally, building a devoted following through performances defined by emotional gravity and quiet intensity. His shows favor connection over spectacle. His songs are delivered with vulnerability, space, and an instinctive understanding of when to let silence speak. Whether in intimate venues or on larger stages, his performances are often described as disarmingly personal, leaving audiences feeling less like spectators and more like participants.

DeWyze’s music exists in a space where intimacy and craft quietly command attention. His work has drawn comparisons to Iron & Wine and The Paper Kites, artists known for atmosphere and emotional precision. Rooted in early influences such as Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, all the way to Elliott Smith, his songwriting favors nuance over excess—melodies that unfold patiently, lyrics that reward close listening.

Set in a family-run restaurant in Ilocos, this intergenerational story follows Jorge, a privileged young man, and Kiko, a street-smart newcomer, as they uncover a hidden box of unsent letters and photographs after the death of Jorge’s grandfather, Tino, a retired Maui sakada. The discovery reveals a decades-old love story between Tino and his best friend, B**g — one shaped by migration, forgetting, and sacrifice. As Jorge and Kiko piece together the past, their own relationship begins to change. Rooted in Ilokano culture, the film is a quiet exploration of class, intimacy, memory, and the legacies we choose to carry forward.

Webseries formatted a full length feature film. Ilokano language with English subtitles.

A part of our Pride Month celebrations, supported by Aloha Maui Pride.

Mahalo to the Maui Film Commission!
