Key West’s Rooster Cemetery!

Want something weird to do in the Keys? Pack up and head on down to find this one and ONLY restaurant graveyard oddity… yes, I said a restaurant! As you may or may not know, roosters run wild in Key West along the alleys and roads owning the streets as tourist gawk and take photos of this strange yet everyday occurrence. These free-roaming chickens & roosters are descendants of the old cock-fighting roosters that at one time were legal in this town and believe it or not were frequently refereed by novelist and local hero Ernest Hemingway! How’s that for a scoop on Hemingway and his correlation with roosters! There’s a place that you too can go pay homage to those former c***s that have passed on to the pearly gates… hmmm, ok to the wrought iron gates of the Rooster Cemetery.
You can find this weird spectacle at 729 Thomas Street and the corner of Petronia Street a few blocks south of Duval at the equally famous outside dining area of the Blue Heaven Restaurant. I think the name on the headstone below sums it up and says it all! So be the first on your block to see Key West’s immortalized c***s! :-) Hey, remember this is Key West and ANYTHING goes here… after all, this is where the men are men and the women are men too! :-)

Manatee Watching!

So where’s the best place on US-1 in the Florida Keys to have a chance of seeing a Manatee? Well that’s easy, it’s Manatee Creek at Mile Marker 112.8 as posted on the side of the bridge.

Manatees are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivorous marine mammals with paddle-like flippers sometimes known as Sea Cows. They are noted for their friendly nature, their large size up to 12 ft in length with the average being 9 ft. The name manatí comes from pre-Columbian people of the Caribbean meaning “breast”.

US-1 of course is very busy so be safe and park your car close to the near by marina on Morris Road and walk to the edge of the creek NEVER crossing or getting on the busy road itself! This of course is FREE.

Human-Sized Conch Shell At Key West High School!

As you might expect, Key West is full of conch shells of all shapes and sizes. This is a perfect example of a smaller 6′ tall symbol of Key West in front of the High School on Flagler Street.

This is a bonus blog, two for the price of one, located in the same parking lot is the Florida Key’s LARGEST CONCH SHELL blogged about last year. So when in town drop by and check out both of these conch shells within site of each other… don’t forget your camera!

Jewfish Creek Bridge Historical Marker!

Welcome to the historic Jewfish Creek Bridge! This is an important yet overlooked and forgotten part of the Florida Keys history being the FIRST major bridge you’ll reach in making your way down to Key West.

Over all the years there’s been three very different yet unique types of bridges spanning this waterway. The first was called a Swingspan bridge in 1907 to 1944 which I crossed countless times as a child with my parents in our family station wagon like Chevy Chase in the movie Vacation. The second called a Bascule bridge (draw bridge) was in service from 1944-2008 which I got stopped at many times as a child and adult. The current bridge was completed in 2008 and was built to last throughout mine and your lifetimes! Oh yeah, it’s more commonly known as the 18-Mile Stretch Bridge rather than Jewfish Creek Bridge.

You too can see this hard to find Jewfish Creek Bridge historical marker located under the bridge just in front of the Blackwater Siren restaurant. Go to Mile Marker 108.1 bayside and take the access road in the middle of the 18-mile stretch bridge and follow the road to its end.

Key West’s Washtub Decor!

It’s not everyday that you see galvanized washtubs hanging from the ceiling used as lights to enhance a buildings decor & atmosphere! Then again, we are in Key West which makes all of the madness expected & accepted as simply par for the course!

I recently had lunch here and just so happen to look upward some 6 feet above the ceiling fans and to my amazement these washtubs stuck out like a sore thumb and instantly brought upon a giggle. Acting like ET I pointed my finger toward the airborne adornments so that my better half could also admire (or laugh at) the lavish lamps completing this unique ambiance. You know what… I actually like it… but then again, I like falling out of trees too! 🙂

You too can gander at this one-of-a-kind sight complete with an oceanfront table while soaking in some sun and drinking down a well deserved brew. It definitely makes a great conversation piece and photo too! This washtub wonder can be found in the restaurant and bar area of the Ibis Resort on Roosevelt Blvd. here in sunny Key West where you can ALWAYS find the unexpected!

The Pink Taxis Of Key West!

Yes, I’m embarrassed to say that Key West does indeed have PINK taxis. 😦 So sad!

I’m pretty sure the reasoning behind it is simple, Key West is known for its all night party atmosphere doing the World Famous Bar Hopping Duval Crawl. (Though I wouldn’t know anything about that personally!) 🙂 Here’s the scoop: After several intoxicating adult beverages science has proven that PINK is the easiest color to see and therefore Key West has followed suite with many other cities in converting all of their yellow taxis to pink. OK, that was an out right lie! 🙂 I totally made that up… hey, you’d make up the same outlandish story to save face if you were the ONLY city in America with PINK taxis! 🙂 I’m so incredibly embarrassed!

You can find the pink city icons anywhere and everywhere along Key West’s multi-lane highway & bi-ways… wow, what’s wrong with me today, that too was an untruth… Key West has NO such multi-lane roads! 🙂 Who cares, just come down and see these laughable eyesores we call “Pink Taxis” for yourself!

The Scales Of Justice!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve past this ALWAYS saying “Next Time”… well, that next time was on this day. I didn’t have a clue what it was as I was passing by at 45 m.p.h. some 100 times before and never stopping.

I’m embarrassed to say, ok no I’m not, those of you that know me, I don’t get embarrassed! I actually thought it was a horse hitching post wondering what the heck is was doing there? Anyway, during my first and only stop here it turns out to be the ‘Scales Of Justice’ in front of a lawyers office of all places! :-)

You too can find this miniature artists rendering of the famous blindfold covered lady holding scales near Mile Marker 88.7 oceanside at the edge of the woods near a parking lot.

A horse hitching post… I’m so embarrassed! :-)

Mellow Folk Welcome!

A greeting straight from the islands! It’s so laid back that it’s written in all lower case letters stating ‘mellow folk welcome’.

Island life is such a big part of the Florida Key’s mystique. Vacationers flock to the Keys in droves for a small sample of our laid back atmosphere, style & tradition. Here at this very tiny local watering hole across the street from a small trailer park you’ll find this great example of laid back expression seen hanging over its wooden arched gate. I love the Keys and its SLOW laid back pace of life, it’s just my style! :-)

You can find this ‘mellow folk welcome’ sign just before the legendary local favorite Hogfish Bar & Grill on Stock Island. Go to Mile Marker 5 oceanside off US-1 at the Burger King, down 1-block turning left onto McDonald Ave that turns into Maloney Ave, turn right onto 4th Ave, left on Front Street and there you will see it on the right about a 100 feet or so.

Lighthouse Lens!

Ever seen a vintage lighthouse lens? Now’s your chance, I’ve found one large enough to almost walk into if they’d let you!

Formerly atop an 88-step circular stairway leading to the deck observatory stood this glass prism behemoth called a Fresnel lens. The lighthouse was built in 1847 and first lit up the Key West shoreline in 1849. It was eventually outdated and automated working continuously from 1915. 1938.

You can find the former Key West beacon at the corner of Whitehead Street & Truman Avenue across from Ernest Hemingway’s House. There is an entrance fee to get into this portion of the Key West Lighthouse exhibit.

Rooftop Shark Submarine!

So, I ask you, where in the Florida Keys can you find a single person submersible yellow submarine with a shark painted on it? Don’t even begin to guess, I’ll tell you exactly where!

You can find this one-of-a-kind yellow solo rooftop submarine at Mile Marker 83.0 bayside atop the roof of the Divers Museum. The sub is FREE to view from the outside of the building, the museum itself is not. 😦
