First layer of the concrete deck installed. These concrete planks are structural.
What does it take to rebuild Soyuzivka’s pool and deck?
• 2 years of planning
• 3 engineers, 1 architect and 1 project manager
• Myself and key members of the Soyuzivka team
• 12 contractors
• Pre-approvals from the Town Building Department, the County Health Department and regulations from the State Sanitary Codes
• Decisions and backing from a very supportive UNF Board of Directors
What adds to the complexity of a job of this magnitude?
• Lack of historical plans on the existing deck. We opened up a ‘can of worms’ at every corner. After a while the surprises ceased to surprise us.
• Demolishing the structure around the pool without causing damage to the pool
• Removing the fiberglass pool liner, assessing the structure of the pool, repairing the pool, and prepping the pool surface for the finishing top coat
• The weather: Imaging having to shovel out 2-feet of snow from inside the pool, and removing 2-feet of snow from the deck
• The cold temperatures: Yes, neither tools nor humans work well outdoors when it’s single digits as what we experienced this winter
What is left before the pool will open?
• Addition of a waterproofing membrane to the deck
• Pouring a concrete slab as the deck top
• Fabricating and installing a brand-new fence
• Shooting the finishing Gunite coat inside the pool
• Chemically balancing the water in the pool for your safety
• An assortment of other details that are too many to list
Will the pool project be complete when it opens?
• No. There are a number of “day 2” items that we will continue to work on throughout the summer that will not interfere with your pool and swimming experience
When will the pool be open?
• It would be pretty silly to open the pool after Labor Day – wouldn’t you agree? For now, let’s say, “Coming Summer 2026!”

This is no Dad joke—though we’ll have plenty of those on standby! Join us for a Father’s Day brunch that finally lives up to your expectations (and we know they're high).
