HARDY WINS TOPLESS ;PAUGH WINS #6; DEFIBAUGH WINS again; SMITH WINS 5TH, DOTSON TAKES HOTMODS IN SEASON FINALE FALL FESTIVAL
Elkins Raceway finished up its 73rd anniversary season Saturday, going out with several 'bangs' and another packed general admission area. The racing action combined with the tremendous fireworks display sent fans home in a positive mood in the final event for current management.
With the special-event format in place, the top six starters of each division in each feature all drew for positions, and all features went extra distances for increased payouts.
The Budweiser Late Models ran 'topless' this evening, as has become the norm for the season finale. Kyle Hardy, Wi******er VA, drew the pole position and took full advantage to earn his first-ever Elkins Late Model win. Michael Lake and Kris Southern (from 8th) made Hardy earn the win, finishing 2nd and 3rd ahead of Tim Senic and Shane Hitt. Lake, was fast qualifier; he, Troy Frazier, and Hardy won the heats. For Frazier, it was his first Late Model checkered, after participating in the Pure Stock and Semi-Late/Crate classes. Hardy had a successful weekend; he also won RUSH tour features on Friday at Tri-City Speedway )PA) and Sunday at Tyler County Speedway. Brian Fawley was the lone Late Model entrant who didn't start the 50-lap main.
Garrett Paugh earned his track-leading 6th feature win, taking the 30-lap TKS Contracting/High Point Construction Ultimate Pro Late Model main after a battle with Luke Hyre, who started 5th. Kolbe Kimbrew and Ryan Hare had a race-long battle for 3rd and 4th, finishing in that order, with 10th-starter Greg Hicks founding out the top 5; Kenny Rowback started 18th and finished 9th Hyre led qualifying; Paugh Brent Trimble, and Chandi Currence won the heats for the 18-car field, largest of the season. Early-race favorites Trimble and Greg Carrico dropped out early, with Carrico finishing 16th and Trimble 17th.
The winner of the Jenkins Ford UMP Modified 25-lap feature didn't 'follow the scropt'; Dave Defibaugh drew the #5 starting spot, but managed to get thru some good competition for his 4th A-Main win of the year. Phil Jeffries, Scott Bittinger, Gunner Binns, and Chad Tasker finished 2-5. Gary Dalton was fast timer; Jeffries and Defibaugh won prelims.
Chris Smith put a big 'cap' on a successful season with his 5th win of the summer in the Collins Service Center Street Stocks 20-lap headliner. Kodi McCauley, Barry Fairbanks, Ronnie Tincher, and Rodney Cole finished behind the winner. Fairbanks was fast qualifier; he and Smith won the heats.
The other new feature winner of the season emerged in the 20-lap Blue Ridge Construction EDGE Hot Mod main, as C. J. Dotson outran Buddy Tasker, Kylie Hull, Roger,Hull, and Michale Cromer (from 10th). Dotson timed quickest; Dotson and the Hulls won the heats; for Kylie, it was her first, and the feature finish was her best.
