Russian contemporary artist Georgy Kurasov exhibits and sells paintings exclusively in North America. At the young age of 12 he attended the St. Petersburg Art School for gifted children and eventually graduated in 1976 with the highest grade in his class. The fantastical paintings are filled with color and cubism, reminiscent of Picasso.

Linnea Strid is a Swedish artist with a fascination for realism. Her honest, up close, and painfully private portraits depict a combination of light refractions, waves of water, and raw emotion.

Hailing from Sweden, Hilma Af Klint never showed her 1200 paintings and 150 notebooks to her contemporaries and even requested that they should be kept secret until 20 years after her death, convinced that her work would not be understood by the public until then. Thus, she remained unknown as an abstract artist during her time. Her paintings eventually became the first Western abstract works known to the current art community, and they were often visual depictions of deeply complex spiritual ideas.

Los Angeles-based artist Alex Gardner paints androgynous black bodies in surreal compositions within a consistent pastel palette. Faceless figure allow viewers to project and empathize with the subjects. Gardner’s use of acrylic is a departure from the typical use of oil in figurative paintings, and the application to a sanded gesso canvas creates a fresco-like surface.

Belgian photographer Carl De Keyzer captures North Korea under strictly supervised guided tours. De Keyzer has captured highly politicized events internationally before, including the fall of the Soviet Union and the decline of Cuba. He notes that North Korea was unlike it’s usual depiction in Western media. Although it can seem a bit sterile and antiseptic in the photos, the population seems well-fed, well-dressed, and incredibly human. Of course, his photographs were taken under supervision and he was only allowed access to specific areas, so viewers may not necessarily be getting the full picture.

At the age of 2, Margaret Keane suffered an eardrum injury forcing her to start looking at people’s eyes to better understand them. This deeply influenced her kitsch artworks and Margaret quickly became a household name for her portraiture of children with oversized eyes. Walter Keane, her husband, claimed credit for the paintings and sold them for millions until their divorce in 1965, when Margaret had to take him to court to prove she was the true artist responsible. The Tim Burton film Big Eyes portrays this life story and greatly renewed interest in her works.

Erwin Wurm’s aptly titled “Fat House” and “Fat Car” sculptures represent societal overconsumption and a consumer obsession with material goods. The bulging, inflated silhouette on objects we normally perceive as sleek and structured is humorous but also uncomfortable. These works have been exhibited internationally, from San Francisco to Moscow.
