Get your first sneak peak at Dear Elizabeth by Annaliese Ruhs ‘26

With just a little over TWO weeks till opening, NOW is the time to get tickets before they are gone!!

Starting in 1947, two successful poets, Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell began sharing tales of their lives together. Both struggled with alcohol and mental health problems but the two found comfort in their correspondence. Sarah Ruhl takes the pairs over 400 letters and edits them into a theatrical experience sharing the love and lives of the two poets.

ALUMNI AUGUST Day 31: Colleen Ochab!

A 2018 grad, Colleen started in Carthage Theatre by designing her own lighting & sound major. That decision lead her to work at Medieval Times in their tech department, and the rest is “medieval” history.

However, it wasn’t until she battled breast cancer that this fantasy nerd realized her dream was always to write stories, so she started a new adventure, studying screenwriting at DePaul. Now, she’s publishing her first book! Look out for “Fight For Your Fairytale: A Guided Quest to Total Transformation” coming this October! Connect with Colleen ( on Insta) to join the launch!

ALUMNI AUGUST Day 30: Hannah Lindsey!

Immediately after graduation in 2010, Hannah spent five months as a production intern at Peninsula Players in Door County. She then spent two seasons as an Assistant Stage Manager at First Stage Children’s Theater in Milwaukee.

Currently, Hannah works as a Learning Specialist at a software company where she uses her stage management skills to manage projects, and those acting class skills while training coworkers. In the evenings, Hannah is also a Strength coach in Arlington Heights with fellow Carthage Theatre alum Sammy Jo Mahler!

ALUMNI AUGUST Day 29: C**t Luedtke!

After graduating in 2017, C**t moved to New York City where he stage managed on Broadway, off-Broadway, and regionally across the country. His favorite NY credits include "Funny Girl" on Broadway (ASM Sub) and "What the Constitution Means to Me" (New York Theatre Workshop).

He’s been back in Illinois for a year now and has just wrapped up back-to-back (-to-back!) productions as the stage manager at the Marriott: “Joseph…”, “Titanic,” and “Always Something There…” He’s now managing a full season at Chicago Opera Theatre! And if that isn’t enough to keep a person busy, C**t is working on starting his own coffee roasting company!

ALUMNI AUGUST Day 28: Marie Tredway!

When filming began for season 11 of Chicago Med this summer, 2017 Carthage grad Marie Tredway reported for duty, shooting her 72nd episode as Nurse Trini. Wow!

During filming hiatus between seasons, Marie performed staged readings of the play “Blood of My Mother’s” at Paramount Theater and Bramble Arts Loft. She also was able to introduce new alumna and awesome mentee Lily Lourigan to the Chicago theater scene. The Carthage alumni network is STRONG. :)

Marie writes, “I will always credit Carthage and the theater department for my well-rounded multi-dimensional artistic foundation as well as the idea of artist activism: championing and supporting marginalized communities through our work.”

ALUMNI AUGUST Day 27: Maggie Spanuello!

After graduating in 2006, Maggie Spanuello completed her M.F.A. in Theatre-Directing at Western Illinois University. She’s been racking up an impressive assortment of directing credits since then, including working as Associate Director of the off-Broadway production and US tour of the sensational “Woman in Black”!

Maggie’s newest adventure has her managing the Chicago branch of the highly successful phenomenon, Drunk Shakespeare! Additionally, rehearsal began this week for their special Halloween production, “Drunk Dracula,” with Maggie directing. Check it out (if you’re 21 or older)!

ALUMNI AUGUST Day 26: Tommy Novak!

It seems like Carthage Theatre grad Tommy Novak (‘11, M.M. ‘20) always has BIG news! This summer was no exception as they directed a Chicago-area production of BIG: THE MUSICAL! (Check out that last pic of co-alum Mark Bracken in the cast! Yay Mark Bracken!)

What else? We’re extremely excited for Tommy's new position at the world-class Lyric Opera where they serve as their casting director for the actors and supers, and as third assistant stage manager on all the operas! He is also their primary acting coach at the Ryan Opera Center.

(And yes, we know the Carthage College Alumni page just did a feature on Tommy too, but this is all just too great not to celebrate!)

ALUMNI AUGUST Day 25: Ella Walker!

Since graduating with a degree in Theatre Performance and a minor in English, Ella (Spoelstra) Walker has been an arts marketer and non-profit admin while continuing to teach, direct, and choreograph for adult and youth theatre.

Ella completed a masters degree in Leadership for Creative Enterprises at Northwestern University in December 2024 and has since found her way back to Wisconsin! She started a new position as the Managing Director of Sunset Playhouse in Elm Grove, Wisconsin this July. Congratulations, Ella!

ALUMNI AUGUST Day 24: Lisa Gifford!

After graduating from Carthage in 2006, Lisa (Balek) Gifford also earned a BS in Psychology and MAs in both Education and Administrative Leadership. While the classroom has become one of the biggest stages she works on, she also works within community theatre, serving as second vice-president for the Illinois Theatre Association and recently serving as Master Electrician for Festival 56.

Carthage Theatre is VERY excited to welcome Lisa back as Lighting Designer for “The Moors” this season. She writes, “It’s cathartic returning to Carthage again at a time of significant change in my life. It’s grounding to return "home" to the same support system that gave me the courage, skill and strength to walk away. My time at Carthage prepared me for more than a career—it prepared me for life. The mentorship, the challenges, and the opportunities taught me how to think critically and to lead with integrity and resilience.”
