My craft goes way back….

In the old Scottish cottages nothing was ever truly wasted, not even the clothes worn to rags. 🧵

On the cold stone floors of croft houses and tenement rooms alike, one of the warmest and most personal things in the whole home was the rag rug, hooked by hand at the fireside through the long dark evenings. Every worn out shirt, faded dress, outgrown coat and threadbare blanket was cut into narrow strips and pulled, one loop at a time, through a stretched backing of old hessian sacking. Nothing was bought. The whole rug was made from the family's own worn clothes.

It was slow, patient work, often done by the women and children of the house as the peat fire glowed and the kettle sang. Some rugs were made in simple bands of colour, others in careful patterns, and now and then a proud crofter's wife would work a whole picture into hers. When it was finished it was laid before the hearth or beside the box bed, the first thing bare feet touched on a freezing morning.

And here is the tender part. A rag rug was quite literally woven from a family's life. In its mingled colours were the strips of a father's old working shirt, a bairn's outgrown dress, a grandmother's Sunday best long past mending. Every rug was a quiet patchwork of the people who had worn those clothes, warmth made from memory.

When times were hard, and in Scotland they often were, this was thrift raised to an art, beauty made from what little there was. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Long after the makers were gone, these humble rugs stayed by the fire, holding the whole family underfoot, colour by colour, life by life.
