Paul Hedman Suzuki Violin Studio

Paul Hedman Suzuki Violin Studio Teaching students violin using the Suzuki Method. Mr. The parent is taught to teach the child.

Hedman's aim is to partner with parents in teaching their children to play the violin and to foster a love of music in the home. It is a “hands-on” approach in which the parent is required to attend the lessons with the very young child and, in so doing, be able to initiate and supervise practice sessions at home. There are also three extra-musical goals:

- to broaden the child's attention span t

hrough the intense concentration required by the study of the violin
- to teach the child to work slowly and carefully in a step by step manner
- perhaps most importantly to instill in the child an appreciation for delayed gratification, the certain knowledge that the application of energy over extended periods of time will result in the solving of problems and the mastery of skills
The accomplishment of these goals will bode well for success in any other challenges a child might undertake.

Sergei Rachmaninov was born on this day, April 1, in 1873. His "Vocalise," was originally written for vocal soloist with orchestra but has has been transcribed for numerous other combinations. It is an encapsulation of the man's plaintive lyricism and soul probing harmony.

This performance of the first movement of Sonata No.1 in G Minor for Solo Violin by Johann Sebastian Bach is lovely and is most convincing.

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on (O.S.) March 21, 1685. He remains one of the greatest composers who ever lived and is owed a tremendous debt by us violinists. We get to play his Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, one movement of which is here performed by the great Hilary Hahn, the Six Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord, and three concerti for the instrument with orchestra. I love the music of Bach and constantly seek to impress upon my students its greatness and its necessity to the art of music and, indeed, to our culture at large.

Just as it is important for students to recognize why they read literature, they should recognize how the musical language and literature can fulfill the very same human needs.

There is a growing body of evidence supporting the value, indeed the necessity, of arts education. The discipline one acquires from the study of music, art, theater, and, of course, dance, is immeasurable. Then of course there is the sheer joy derived from a life filled with such beauties!

Dance — and physical activity — should have the same status in schools as math, science and language. Psst: it may even help raise test scores, says Sir Ken Robinson. For several years, I’ve been a…
