It's natural to paint "for the audience" when your work is tied to your income. But even so, to keep our sanity and our creativity close, we need to throw caution to the wind. When I painted this lobster boat, "Stormwalker", Chebeague, Maine, I needed to do something entirely for myself.
I remember thinking I wanted to REALLY indugle myself, so I reached for the largest canvas I had on hand. I had committed to the idea that it would quickly be relegated to the back of the stack in the studio. I wanted to indulge in some pure Fauvist magic, even if the result was "weird". I painted my heart out, and was happy with my result, and that was enough.
Welp.....the paint had barely dried when I got the email from the collector. I had shared it with my list a few days before. And what shocked me even more was that the collector was in Texas. I figured at least it might be someone in New England.
