1-5 Diamond Dust Shoes (Random), 1980
Acrylic, silkscreen ink, and diamond dust on linen or Arches Paper

Shoes were a compelling subject for Warhol throughout his career. During the 1950’s, he gifted shoe drawings to friends, mounted an exhibition dedicated to the subject at the Bodley Gallery in New York, and received numerous commissions for shoe illustrations, including from the well-known manufacturer and retailer, I. Miller Shoes. Warhol also collected shoes, including many by fashion designer Halston. In the early 1980’s, her embarked on a major body of work in which different combinations of shoes were made and covered with reflective “diamond dust”. Warhol increasingly used the novel material in prints, portraits, and paintings, such as his Gems and Shadows works. However, it is in the Shoe series that the material best evokes the glitter and glitz of the fashionable accessories he was infatuated with. == Warhol Museum card, 2026
