Keene Black Culture Matters

It is the culmination of five years’ worth of work between the Historical Society of Cheshire County (Keene) and the Monadnock Center for History and Culture (Peterborough) and many citizen archivists who assisted in recovering the stories of individuals and families of color in southwest NH by scouring historical documents dating from the 1730s and 1930s. Volunteers included the city of Keene’s Heritage Commission members, librarians and archeologists from Cheshire County, and students from Northeastern University, Keene State College, UMASS Amherst, Keene High School and more.

Jeanna Carrol head of the historic society shared this in an email “It’s truly exciting to showcase people of color from our community’s past and this work is leading to a much fuller, richer understanding of Black history in rural New England as well as our complex Indigenous history. We’re already connecting with other projects like this located around New England to pull the research together in the upcoming years”.

Join me and show your support for this very important initiative to set up a Multicultural Center in Keene to serve our immediate community as well as surrounding communities.

The Keene Community Cultural Center project hopes to bring together individuals from different cultural backgrounds with the common goals of addressing diverse needs to bring our community together. We hope to create a tangible physical space we can call home.

Additional Shelter Space Opening
Dangerously Low Temperatures - Wind Chill Warning

Hundred Nights has worked with the City to open additional temporary shelter space in Keene to help people get in from the cold during the dangerously cold weather in the coming days. Please visit Hundred Nights at 17 Lamson Street in Keene or call (603) 352-5197 as soon as possible if you need shelter.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning. From midnight Thursday night until Saturday afternoon the bitter cold combined with gusty winds will lead to widespread dangerously cold wind chills as low as 40 degrees below zero. Please take action now to get in from the cold.

Did you know that for decades Black smokers were aggressively targeted with the marketing of menthol flavored ci******es. This week the FDA moves with plans that proposes a ban on menthol ci******es and flavored ci**rs. Such a move will improve the health and reduce the mortality risk of current smokers of menthol ci******es or flavored ci**rs by substantially decreasing their consumption and increasing the likelihood of cessation.

The ban—which could take at least a year to go into effect—is expected to have the largest impact on Black smokers, the majority of whom smoke menthol ci******es and whom the to***co industry has targeted aggressively in marketing the products, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The US Food and Drug Administration proposed on Thursday a rule to ban menthol ci******es and flavored ci**rs.
