Zenith Ensemble, Keene’s professional choir directed by Dr. Matthew Leese, is preparing for a concert of extraordinary choral music combining Zenith Artists with community members.
On Saturday, June 28th at 7:00pm, Zenith Professional Artists will be joined by auditioned community singers and Zenith Scholars to perform in the region’s most sought-after venue for choral music performances: St. Bernard Church in Keene, NH.
The concert of sublime a ca****la music includes Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ reflective Mass for Double Choir, conceived shortly after the composer returned from military service in WWI. Other small works include Ave Verum Corpus by Jessica French, and Six Motets by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, chosen to complement the grandeur and mystery of St Bernard’s.
“The audience is going to love the Vaughan-Williams Mass,” says Leese, Zenith’s Artistic Director, and Director of Vocal Music at Keene High School. “There are moments of medieval calm, Venetian splendor, and a deeply personal reflection of wartime trauma”.
Tickets are $25 in advance or at the door, and limited complimentary tickets are available. More information and online tickets available at www.thezenithensemble.com.
Zenith Scholar positions are open to any singer who is a current choral student in High School, or a tertiary institution with Music as a focus in their studies. This year’s 11 scholars hail from Keene High School, Keene State College, Hollis-Brookline High School, Agawam High School, Stetson University, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. The full ensemble is enriched by 26 auditioned community members drawn from the Monadnock Region’s rich choral culture, and as far away as Maine, Vermont and Connecticut. Creating opportunities for singers of all ages to participate in an intergenerational choir creating exceptional music is an important part of Zenith Ensemble’s mission.
The professional Zenith artists are based largely in the ensemble’s home state of New Hampshire, with some traveling from Massachusetts, Maine and Philadelphia. “It is critical to me that we employ artists based in Northern New England,” Leese said. The last decade has seen an interesting trend of artistic folks moving away from the large urban centers, many looking for the lifestyle that the wild north provides. These artists have national and international accolades and are truly excited to perform in Keene”.
