Chronic fatigue has never felt passive to me.

It feels like fighting with everything I have just to take one step forward, while something unseen wraps itself around my body and drags me backward. I strain and push and I fight for the movement that used to come naturally.

I used to be a runner. I knew what it felt like to tell my body to move and have it obey. Now, some days, getting out of bed feels like trying to run through a forest with vines tangled around my limbs.

From the outside, it might look like I’m doing nothing. Just…resting. Staying still.
But stillness isn’t always rest. And a body that isn’t moving isn’t a body that isn’t fighting.

When you see me lying in bed, this is what I’m actually doing.

My doctor gave me a diagram that looked like it belonged in a neurology textbook, complete with about 700 anatomical structures in Latin I had never heard of.

So naturally, I translated it, simplified it, and turned it into something I could actually understand.

At this point I’m not sure if I’m a chronic illness patient or an unpaid neuroscience student. And yes, I am now reconsidering my life choicesā€¦šŸ¤ÆšŸ«Ø

I made an entire post explaining how I wrote a book without being able to look at screens.
Then I looked at a screen for approximately 47 years to make this post. Now I’m in excruciating pain.
The irony is not lost on me.
Apparently the lesson here is:
I can write a book without looking at a screen, but I cannot make an Instagram post without looking at one.

Anyway, if you also have limited screen time, I hope this gives you some ideas for working around it. You don’t necessarily have to create things the ā€œnormalā€ way. Sometimes you just have to get a little creative with the tools you have.

Just casually sitting in a doctor’s waiting room with my service dog…and the medical illustration I drew explaining why sitting in a doctor’s waiting room is difficult for me hanging directly behind me.

At least my artwork understands me.

Taking the overnight train to Florida with my service dog and realizing I may have accidentally become a snowbird.

Just me, Stƶckli, and approximately 400 retired people heading south for the winter.

Annual performance review for Stƶckli, service dog edition.

Emotional support: exceptional cuteness
(frankly, excessive).
Deep pressure therapy: 10/10, would recommend.
Medical alert: results may vary depending on whether she feels like working. šŸ˜‚
Walking support: excellent, provided she isn’t distracted by a leaf.

Overall rating: irreplaceable.
