Did you know Nathan grew up in SLC?
For AAPI Heritage Month, we’re highlighting athletes like Nathan Chen whose stories show how Olympic legacy can begin close to home and grow onto the world stage.
Nathan Chen’s story carries special meaning in Utah because his Olympic journey began right here in Salt Lake City.
Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Chen started skating at age 3, inspired by a family deeply connected to both figure skating and ice hockey. His early foundation in skating, along with training in gymnastics and ballet, helped shape the athleticism, precision, and artistry that would make him one of the most dominant figure skaters in the world.
A two-time Olympian, Chen made his Olympic debut at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games, earning bronze with Team USA in the team event. Four years later, he delivered a career-defining performance at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, winning gold in men’s singles and helping Team USA earn another medal in the team event.
Known for his groundbreaking technical ability, Chen became the first skater to land five quadruple jumps in a single performance at the U.S. Championships and went on to win three World Championship titles. From Salt Lake City ice to the top of the Olympic podium, his journey is a powerful reminder that Olympic legacy is not just something Utah preserves — it is something Utah helps create.
