I’ve been spending a lot of my down time working on fun designs. This is a poster I made after watching based on the novel written by . I was trying to come up with a faithful depiction that includes a lot of Easter eggs when you look a little closer. It’s a good way to play around with photoshop, learn new methods to create different effects and work within an existing IP, as if it were a request from a potential client.

I finally got a quality printer and one of the first things I wanted to do was make a new game sleeve for my copy. Tons of fun Easter eggs in this design, featuring both players and nods to the old school game cases. Ultimately it was just something fun to design start to finish and now display on my shelf. Had to rep the in a bigger way than the original case design does.

I don’t think of myself as a themed artist, but whenever I look at my work through the years a pattern does emerge. Yes there’s a lot of teams or things I enjoy that are repeated. There’s also a clear focus on people or feelings of immense effort. Effort is important to me as an artist because as my projects become more encompassing and take longer to complete, I want the effort to be visible. I want it to show in both results, composition and imagery. I don’t want to show something that seems incomplete and especially when drawing athletes, I want to showcase many different aspects of their skill and effort in their element.

This is best demonstrated in these two images. 13 years apart, same team, same position and yet completely different approach. Now, was sensational to watch. This is someone who worked hard and that was so evident watching him play. You wouldn’t know that just by the picture, but it’s true. He’s in my top 5 favorite Husker players ever. And while I remember being proud of my technical skill to capture the image, that’s about all I did. Now fast forward 13 years and this image of This is a player who is electric, who gets people on their feet and has a work ethic very similar to that of Burkhead’s, which I feel like is much more evident because of the composition and the images I chose. All the things I said about Rex are true for Emmett as well, but I think only one of these images really shows that. And it shows growth of myself as an artist. It shows the effort I put into showcasing the things I think are awesome about Emmett. As I continue to grow as an artist I want to portray things in a thoughtful manner, where it is evident to the viewer that there’s something I’m trying to show, even if they have no idea who the subject is.

I figured a standalone picture was the best way to showcase this one. It is complete, I am very happy with it. I think I’ve outdone myself and I am looking forward to continue on that trend. good luck next week, thank you for being an electric part of and I’m sure whatever team selects you at the will be getting a monster.

I’ll be posting a complete progress reel at some point but I was just too excited to share this now that it is finished!

Hopefully the last WIP post before it’s finished! That goal line is right there! The final bit of really sharpening the details and things is my favorite part, not only because it’s close to the end but because it really pushes what seems to be a complete image into the nice finished piece.

Another update, I can see the finish line but still a lot of adjustments and fine tuning to make! Super happy with the results so far, I think there’s only a few things I really need to tighten up but overall I’m excited.

Some more progress on the piece I’m working on. It’s starting to really come together nicely and it’s quickly becoming my favorite piece in both composition but also just ex*****on. Every time I make something I have this moment where I’m hyper aware that it’s the best one I’ve done, most of the time anyway. The growth is exciting to realize, and being able to recognize the effort put in to making yourself more skilled at whatever it is feels great. Still more to go but I’m liking how it’s looking so far.

Some long overdue progress on the picture. It’s really hard to not jump around and work from left to right as to prevent smudging and other things but it’s coming along nicely. Really fun watching the layers build up and add depth.

Swipe to see some timelapse of the process.

Some progress starting to take shape on the so far. There’s a few things I’m doing differently than I have before even if it doesn’t appear that much different than any other drawing. I’m working a lot more thoroughly with layers and trying to get the areas more saturated with shading before I add in any finite details. I’m also working on a paper that’s more coarse on the surface so it gives the drawing a more grainy look, which I enjoy. There’s something about the tactile aspect of paper bubbling the surface of a work of art that makes it feel so grounded and real, even if it’s not exactly realistic.
