I am so excited for this opportunity to have my artwork displayed at the Minden Opera House in my first ever art exhibit! If you’re in the Minden, NE area on Saturday, September 26th, I would be honored to see you there! Otherwise my display will be there through the months of September and October! When I retired from teaching in 2019 I had no idea this was part of my next chapter but I am sure enjoying the direction life has been taking me!

So, what’s YOUR favorite part of sorting buttons? I love finding those extra pretty, unique ones! And, whenever you get a new jar of old buttons to sort through, it’s also interesting finding all the little things that AREN’T buttons in the jar! I recently have learned that there are actually buttons that can infect??? other buttons and make them go bad. I’m probably not explaining that right but there are buttons you want to toss! I’m still learning to identify those. Marlen and other button experts, help me out on this, please!!

When I was little Tracie, one of my best friends, had a transparent music box that played Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. I think it was my first experience at ever seeing how a music box worked and I was absolutely mesmerized by it. I am still in awe, watching the little tines pluck out the tune. And, although the little music boxes I have don’t play the same tune, I still find myself drawn to them and why I am really enjoying using them in my recent pieces of assemblage art.

Along with the music box, other items that went into making “Greta” are a metal Ge**er lid to a vintage baby food jar for her face, earrings for her eyes (with a black rhinestone added to each eye), a metal piece from some jewelry item for her nose and a glitzy mouth charm with another black rhinestone added for a sexy little mole. 😂The brass back to her head was a vintage bell with the leather strap that kind of resembles a ponytail in an abstract way. I wish I knew the history behind that bell or even remembered where I got it!! Oh, and her hat was once part of a sprinkler from my yard!! 😂😂

Her large golden “collar” was once a brooch and a golden earring was added to fill space and give more support to the head. I was recently gifted some jewelry items and these arms were among those pieces. They worked perfectly for Greta! She has a black bedazzled strip around the bottom of the base that was part of a bracelet. Her fancy purse is part of a former keychain.
Her legs are one large connected metal piece that used to be some sort of jewelry item. Then, for her shoes, I used a couple orange pieces that were once part of a necklace, topped with some more black rhinestones for some sparkle to her shoes. I needed something to set her on and I found this very unique vintage container that was the perfect size. (I wish I had taken a picture of it before I attached her to it!) I weighted it down with a bunch of chains from necklaces (I have a lot of those for some reason 🤪😂) and attached a baby food lid to the top that I covered with mod podge and a napkin. Then I found the perfect heart for her and there you have it. The story of how Greta came to be! She was quite the problem solving project!!

Daisy Mae was created using a large variety of repurposed pieces starting with the little music box I used for her body and added a heart charm . . . because she’s got a big heart! Her skirt is a bangles bracelet. Her legs are two small spoons with bedazzled bows attached. Her arms are one solid piece that was once part of a necklace and her hands are from another necklace. Her magical star wand was made by attaching a star earring to another earring and her purple balloon was once a bead on a necklace. Her face is a vintage metal measuring tape (it actually still works!) and her eyes were once clip on earrings. Her silver swooshing ponytails were once connected together as a necklace and her crown was formerly part of a keychain. She’s so sweet!!

In the little town of Overton, NE there are two wonderful little antique stores where you can find amazing things like this vintage road flare lantern used during the WWll era and other really cool stuff! I am now on the hunt to find amazing pieces that go with it to create an assemblage art little robot of some type. (I wish I could figure out how to make it light up again. That would be so awesome!!) I fell in love with this piece the moment I saw it and am sure that, whatever it becomes, will be staying in my permanent collection. It’s not every day that you run across something like this!

Key fairies are so fun to create! This little fairy queen even has little silver antennae if you closely into her silver (stainless steel scrubber) curls! Her wings were once earrings. The key I used for her body was part of a necklace. The piece on top of the key on the front was an earring and I can’t remember what the piece was from on the back where I connected the wings. (Believe it or not, I USUALLY remember what the pieces were once a part of!! ) The leaf she’s holding was an earring and I repurposed a small piece of a golden chain and attached it to her fairy dust jar.

I love so many things about this angel, including the fact that so many different repurposed treasures went into creating her! Her face is connected to her golden hair and that was all once an earring. The golden halo and the beautiful darker outer ring of the halo were also once earrings. The piece on the front with the dangles and rhinestones was part of a necklace and so were her shoes/legs. The beads used for her arms and hands are all repurposed from other jewelry items. On the back I added a metal button to connect her wooden wings and she has a vintage postage stamp from Portugal with a religious scene on it from 1967. I added the “Be Still and Know” charm and she seems like the kind of angel that would want to spread that beautiful message. ❤️ Her body is corrugated cardboard. Almost everything that was used to create this was repurposed and I am so pleased with how well it all came together. $27 + s&h

Just a colorful cat on its second life! The cat was created using gel prints I created on scrap paper. Her bedazzled collar is a section from a necklace and her tag was once an earring. I used metallic markers and Posca pens to add some detail. I used a stencil with some texture paste to create the orange design in the background. The orange on the design is actually a foil and I used a different kind of foil in the grass area. There’s different colors of glitter behind each button. I just wanted to create something loaded with color! It’s in an 8x10 frame that I found at a thrift store and gave it an updated look with some new paint.
