Join renowned photographer Joel Sternfeld at the Nelson-Atkins on Oct. 8 from 6–7 pm. Sternfeld will discuss his groundbreaking series American Prospects and how he used landscapes in the 1980s to explore American identity while helping set a new standard for color photography.

His photographs balance humor and seriousness, compassion and criticism, capturing the unexpected moments of everyday life with a sharp and thoughtful eye. Hear the stories and inspiration behind the work from the photographer who found poetry, humor, and tension in the American landscape.

Sternfeld’s series is the focal point of the free exhibition American Prospects and Landscape Photography, 1839 to Today, opening Oct. 3. The exhibition also marks the first time Sternfeld’s photographs, given to the museum as a gift from Peggy and Bill Lyons, will be on view at the Nelson-Atkins.

KCAI students wear many hats 🎩

The tradition of The Fantastic Hat Parade brought a prismatic procession of wondrous helmets and headgear, all created by first-year Foundation Kansas City Art Institute students.

After making their way through The Arterie KC, cheered on by fellow KCAI students and faculty, the parade culminated at the Nelson-Atkins for photo ops, creative conversations, and plenty of hat tipping.

For Labor Day, we’re thinking about the work that doesn’t always come with a paycheck: caring for a child, making art, and finding space to remain yourself while doing both.

Annie Wang’s No. 6: Working Hard is part of a 21-year photographic series documenting her evolving relationship with her son and her own journey as both a mother and an artist. Each photograph (several can be seen in the background) layers moments of motherhood alongside milestones in Wang’s creative life –– a visual record of the work, joy, and challenges that shaped them both.

Some of the most meaningful work happens at home, in the studio, and in all the spaces in between.
