As Sound Mandala closes its summer season, we're reflecting on the vision, dedication, and decades of work Tom Mardikes poured into making this extraordinary experience a reality.

While we're sad to see the Sound Mandala come to an end for the summer, we're grateful to celebrate Tom's remarkable career and the legacy he leaves on Kansas City's arts community.

Congratulations on your retirement, Tom. Thank you for sharing your passion, your creativity, and your innovation with all of us.

What sounds like effortless movement is actually the result of dozens of tiny creative decisions.

For the arcade piece in Signal & Soul, Paul Vedros imagined an '80s arcade designed to keep players dropping in "just one more quarter." Every coin, explosion, and movement through the room was placed meticulously -- sometimes spending 45 minutes on a single idea that might not even work.

As Paul puts it, creating immersive audio is "death by a thousand paper cuts." It's the accumulation of hundreds of small details that turns sound into an experience.

You only have a few more days to experience it: through August 1st at Unicorn Theatre.

INDIE SPOTLIGHT FEATURE: Valley Boy started in a garage. 🎧 From dancey pop throwbacks to raw harmony-driven indie rock, their sound is lush, bass-forward, and impossible to pin down.

This summer Valley Boy is part of Sound Mandala's Indie Spotlight featured the songs Mona & She Calls Me. Their music moves through space in ways a regular speaker system never could.
