UMKC Today featured Sound Mandala in their newsletter. UMKC is an important part of our origin story -- it's where Tom Mardikes, professor of sound design at the UMKC Conservatory, spent over a decade turning a simple question into something that's never existed before:

"I wanted to know how a song would sound if it was mixed in the air, as you listen to it."

That question led to the Sound Mandala -- 100 independent speakers sending music swirling and darting around you. It's fueled by a team of UMKC MFA graduates who have been building this alongside him for years.

This summer, it moves from a UMKC lab to a full blown production at Unicorn Theatre.

Sound Mandala creator Tom Mardikes and sound designer Jon Robertson sat down with KKFI's Artspeak Radio for a deep dive into the history and the magic of Sound Mandala.

They talk about the green LED lights that turn the dark theater into what Jon calls "a galaxy of fireflies" and how all this took years of trial and error building up to this 100-speaker system. 🔊

Thank you to Kansas City critic Robert Butler for experiencing Sound Mandala and sharing his thoughts.

After sitting inside our 100-speaker immersive sound environment, Butler wrote that he was "blown away by the sounds that came at me from all directions" and called Sound Mandala "a pretty nifty diversion for Kansas Citians this summer."

From approaching thunderstorms to psychedelic soundscapes to music that seems to fly across the room, Sound Mandala is unlike anything you've experienced before.
