👀 A little sneak peek...

We're adding a new series of playful signs to the package locker area to help make picking up your mail a little easier (and a little more fun).

This one reminds you that letter mail and oversized packages are kept behind the counter—so if you don't see your mail in a locker, don't worry! Just stop by the register and we'll be happy to help.

Keep an eye out for more new signage rolling out soon. We hope these illustrations make navigating the mailroom a little more intuitive—and maybe even earn a smile while you're picking up your packages.

📬 Mail Call! Our third piece of mail art has arrived for the 6th Annual Underground Mail Art Exhibition.

This intriguing postcard by Ben Hagari draws you in with a double-take. A lone figure stands in a corner of a room. But, which way are they facing? The pose is simple, but it invites questions about identity, anonymity, and what it means to be seen—or unseen.

As always, the postcard's journey is part of the artwork. The USPS barcode, processing marks, and signs of travel become another layer of the piece, reminding us that mail art isn't complete until it has passed through the postal system.

Thank you, Ben, for helping our exhibition grow one mailbox at a time. We can't wait to see what arrives next! There is still time to get in on the exhibition. Make some postcard-size work this weekend and get it in the mail on Monday. And, hey! Postcards have TWO size. Double your fun!

"It's the Fourth of July! Flag cake, everyone!" 🇺🇸

Our favorite frog is channeling a little Little Edie this Independence Day—headscarf, confidence, and all.

Whether you're celebrating with fireworks, a backyard cookout, or simply embracing your own wonderfully eccentric style, we hope your holiday is filled with good company, good food, and a little bit of glorious chaos.

As Little Edie reminded us, "It's very difficult to keep the line between the past and the present." So here's to celebrating the traditions we love while making a few new ones of our own.

Happy Fourth of July from all of us at The Underground! We'll see you when we reopen on Monday, July 6.

📬 It made it.

My contribution to the 6th Annual KCAI Underground Mail Art Exhibition has completed its journey and arrived at The Underground.

This piece began as a laser print inspired by the work of Debra Smith and Marcus Cain. Over that printed structure I did some marbling with sumi ink--- We sell suminagashi sets in the store BTW.

The printed lines echo the parallel marks of the postal barcode, while the rings of sumi ink echo the USPS cancellation marks. The organic patterns of the artwork and the machine-made patterns of the mail stream began speaking the same visual language.

Now the piece is waiting behind the store counter to be joined by others and installed in our windows.

There's still plenty of time to participate. Draw, print, paint, collage, write, experiment, and send us something unexpected. The best mail art doesn't end when it's finished—it keeps changing as it travels.

Smoke, soap, water, glue—
changing direction slowly,
nothing forced to stay.

📬 The first piece has arrived, thanks to the incomparable MacKenzie Fulmer

Yesterday we opened the mailbox to find the very first submission for the 6th Annual KCAI Underground Mail Art Exhibition, and it's a beautiful reminder of why I love this project so much.

This tiny painting traveled through the postal system carrying not just an image, but evidence of its journey—handled by strangers, sorted by machines, and delivered by hand before landing safely in our mail.

Now we're hoping for many, many more.

If you've been thinking about participating, consider this your sign. Mail art can be a drawing, print, collage, painting, poem, photograph, or something that doesn't fit neatly into any category at all.

Choose General’s to Make Your Point ✏️

Our Summer Sale is on! 30% OFF General’s pencils and drawing tools — including charcoal, graphite, pastel pencils, sketch & wash, woodless graphite, carbon sketch, peel & sketch, and more.

These are the kinds of tools that quietly end up in every studio:
• charcoal that actually feels good on paper
• graphite that blends smoothly
• pastel pencils for controlled color work
• all-surface pencils that write on almost anything
• weird little specialty pencils you suddenly can’t live without

General’s has been making pencils for over six generations using sustained yield incense cedar and their signature carbo-weld bonding process, which helps keep cores strong and breakage low. In other words: fewer shattered pencils in your bag and less muttering under your breath while sharpening.
