The Traditional Music Society is proud to present its annual World Music and Dance Showcase!

As in previous years we will feature music and movements from many world cultures … the Middle East, West Africa, India, Cuba and Trinadad. In presentation there will be ensembles from our various community music classes, displaying their talents and accomplishments. And as traditional would have it, we will feature our major performing groups, Swarupa Dance Academy, Bayati, Zay Al Amar, Kimberly Guanciale and New Village. And this year we will have, as our special guest artists, Bryan & Misha Alford. Mr. Alford is an accomplished and extraordinary steel drum player … with its roots in Trinidad it is the major instrument of calypso music. His wife Misha is a phenomenal vocalist in her own right. They are part of the duo ‘The Alfords, performing at many venues in the KC area such as the Blue Room, Lonnie’s Reno Club, and numerous jazz and blues festivals in the area.
The Alfords will liven the place up with a grand Caribbean party!
Swarupa Dance Academy will intrigue us with Classical dance from India. The Bayati ensemble specializes in melodious but rhythmic music from Arabia. Zay Al Amara along with Kimberly will bring the beautiful movements of Middle Eastern belly dance. Our house band, New Village will offer us the percussive sounds of Africa and Cuba.

The Traditional Music Society is a non-for-profit art in education organization dedicated to serving the Kansas City community through the exposure of music and dance from indigenous world cultures. A must-see event!

We are excited to be part of the 2025 Dance in the Park. We hope to see you there!

It’s only 4 days away!

Join us at the 26th Annual Dance in the Park on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 5:30 pm in Roanoke Park to see Soundz of Africa & Esoke Traditional Music Society

Soundz of Africa Esoke is a collaboration between the Traditional Music Society & Esoke Cultural Arts Center. These two non profit community-based organizations have been providing cultural arts programs to the Kansas area, collectively for over 25 years, using the music, dance, and songs from the West African regions of Mali, Senegal, Gambia and Guinea. With the shared goal of cultivating a global understanding of indigenous cultures through music and dance from around the world, they have been an integral part of the arts in education efforts of the greater Kansas City community. By way of classes, workshops, demonstrations and performances they continue to promote and preserve the integrity of the African arts, using it as a means for the community to understand and appreciate other world cultures. Soundz of Africa is one of four performing groups under the umbrella organization Traditional Music Society, founded and directed by Bird Ellington Fleming. Esoke is a performance group made up of drummers and dancers associated with the Esoke Cultural Arts Center, founded and directed by Yaminah Muhammad.
