Artist Spotlight: KCAI student, Shea Daily. You can read about her art and practice in her recent interview with . We’re a huge fan of the weird, lanky figures that are central to her work, and we think you should be too!
~
“My process involves crafting distinctive, hand sewn frames and the entanglement of abstracted, lanky bodies. Although there is a sort of methodology used to create these figures, each one is unique and unrepeatable, reflecting the inherent impermanence of humans and their connections with one another.”

We’re (re)starting our artist spotlight series off with writer & musician, Austin Tucker, who won The Masters Review’s Flash Fiction contest last month. Tucker doesn’t have social media or a website, but you can find his work in Pleiades, Frontier, Zocalo, and his featured story + interview on the Masters Review’s site (link in bio). ✨

We have one final session of our poetry workshop remaining this fall, and though we’re sad that the end is near, we want to thank everyone who has taken part (including those not in this post). The past 7 Tuesdays have been a recurring reminder of the joy of poetry, and most especially: community. We’ll be hosting future workshops in a range of genres, so keep an eye out for those. ✨ And leave a comment if you want to meet up with us at an open mic soon :)

Lots of cool stuff going on this week, but we wanted to highlight a reading happening tomorrow (5/16) at Badseed Gallery. Friends of Dead Peasant, John Gallaher and Luke Rolfes, are celebrating the release of their newest books, and our editors Anthony and Hayley will be reading some poems early on. Come out and support Kansas City writers and artists. We hope to see you there! ✨

Howdy! It’s been a while since we’ve posted as the magazine’s usual operations have taken a backseat in light of current events, but we want to share the incredible work being done in Kansas City’s BDS chapter, and we highly recommend you give them a follow if you’re not already. Recently they have been investigating ICL’s role in the manufacturing of white phosphorus used against civilians in Gaza.

ICL (Israel Chemicals Ltd.) is located in Lawrence, KS, and aside from supplying Israel with illegal chemical weapons, they’re a well-documented polluter; in July 2023 the EPA found ICL to be noncompliant with the Clean Water Act, with wastewater in Lawrence containing a level of phosphorus 309% above the legal limit. So how is ICL still operating while in violation of both the EPA and humanitarian law? is exploring exactly that! Join them and other local coalitions this Sunday for a community event working toward the Palestinian liberation and the expansion of information about ICL’s corruption.
