The Scout Statue – Kansas City, MO
Perched high above Penn Valley Park, The Scout stands as one of Kansas City’s most meaningful landmarks, a bronze tribute to the strength, skill, and spirit of Native American culture. Installed in 1922, this 10-foot statue depicts a Native American on horseback, pausing to study the vast land before him, in a moment of awareness, respect, and connection to nature.
Sculpted by artist Cyrus E. Dallin, The Scout was created to honor and preserve the dignity of Native American life. Dallin devoted much of his career to depicting Indigenous subjects with reverence and authenticity, countering stereotypes of the time. His work reflects admiration for the traditions, resilience, and deep relationship with the land that define Native heritage.
This hand-drawn artwork captures that quiet power with the rider and his horse. More than just a statue, The Scout is a lasting reminder to look back with respect and forward with understanding.
