A quick update from your Fountainverse organizers: As you might've already guessed, the Fountainverse Small Press Poetry Festival and Book Fair is canceled for 2020 with hopeful plans to reconvene in 2021. We deliberated many options for a virtual gathering, but ultimately decided that part of the weekend's magic is the in-person connection—the energy and verve of our voices in one physical place, the tactile experience of browsing books at the fair and sharing a beer (or soda) with the people who made them, and Kansas City itself as a pin on the map to gather and disconnect from the less poetic aspects of our daily lives (which now might include Zoom meetings and endless emails). We felt that without a physical gathering, a crucial element of what makes Fountainverse the festival we all know and love would be lost. With that said, we hope you are all doing well and staying healthy, that you're writing and reading and staying inspired, and that we see you in 2021.

FountainVerse helper-bee JP is out there in the world, check them being mythical.

Yesterday I saddled up my Ranger (aka Bobby) with everything I own and headed west. My Dandylion Riot tour begins its next leg with a September return to my nest in KC. I'm beyond excited to be sharing poetry, advocating for enby's, q***r folks, working class radicals and the idea that there IS another way to live out here in the world which doesn't make us all ill. I'm heading out for a year to see and experience this amazing country of my birth, the US, and to find every kind of alternative community living experience I can.

My first landing spot is with my beloved family in deep country Kansas. Last night we sang around the piano, fed the horses carrots, checked on a pregnant cow who's is ready to calve any moment and told family stories. There were kids and cats running around and many kisses and hugs. We're fitting out my truck with its last needs: glueing in a plexi window to my camper, making a plywood housing for my foam mattress in the bed, getting a waterproof cover for the foam, and now all I need is a can opener :D !

It's gonna be a grand 2020, y'all, and there's gonna be pitfalls and hardships, too, I'm sure. But your steadfast is feeling loved and grateful. Let's make myths of our lives!

FountainVerse: kc small press poetry fest

Outside of box stores and big business are a ton of DIY writers and artists who are sculpting the voice of our generation. They write for love not profit, for truth not fame, they throw their books into the fathomless everything and we’re here to catch them.

Independent Small Presses are breaking new voices at a stunning rate, and producing some of the best modern work in the world. FountainVerse is KC’s festival celebrating their work and voices. Established in 2016, and originally called KC Poetry Throwdown hosted by Prospero’s Books, the festival hosted over 50 nationally based small press poets each year and continues to grow.

After the 2017 event, founders Jason Ryberg and Shawn Pavey, handed the reins to Jason Prue, who enlisted the support of Samantha Slupski and Jeanette Powers, and was privileged to keep another founder, Brandon Whitehead, on with the new vision for FountainVerse. This team has partnered with Charlotte Street Foundation and is happy to be housed in a new, bigger, ADA accessible location at La Esquina Galleries. Support from Chameleon Arts and Francis Family Foundation makes this event free to the public.

The 2018 event is sponsored by local poetic communities: Spartan Press with Jason Ryberg, Poetic Underground with Samantha Slupski, EMP Books with Ezhno Martin, and The Latino Writers Collective with Jose Faus. These folks are hosting nationally based small presses, with confirmations already from Cringe-Worthy Poets Collective and Epic Writes Press with more exciting announcements to follow!
