An ostrich carriage being stopped by the police for crossing the speed limit, Los Angeles, 1930s.

In 1652, the American colony of New Amsterdam passed a law stating, "No wagons, carts or sleighs shall be run, rode or driven at a gallop." The punishment for breaking the law was "two pounds Flemish," the equivalent of US $50 in 2019.

The first numeric speed limit for automobiles was the 10 mph (16 km/h) limit introduced in the United Kingdom in 1861.

In 1913, California adopted its first maximum‐speed law for automobiles: 35 miles an hour in the country, 20 miles in business districts and 15 miles in residential districts.

“The idea was less for safety than for quiet,” an old‐timer recalls. “Those early engines made quite a racket, and the theory was that, the slower they went, the quieter they were.”

In 1959, a top speed of 65 miles an hour was legislated.

・・・
The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien is a Japanese World War II fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service. Allied intelligence initially believed Ki-61s were Messerschmitt Bf 109s and later an Italian Macchi C.202, which led to the Allied reporting name of "Tony", assigned by the United States War Department. It was the only mass-produced Japanese fighter of the war to use a liquid-cooled inline V engine. Over 3,000 Ki-61s were produced. Initial prototypes saw action over Yokohama during the Doolittle Raid on 18 April 1942, and continued to fly combat missions throughout the war.

Pretty unique shot of “Bruce” the TP-40N over the Hudson River by Gary Dean. The P-40 is an excellent airplane in the air, light and nimble and will out climb and turn the P-51 under 10,000 feet. It’s fairly easy to takeoff and land, however suffers when it comes to ground cooling.
