This last week, I moved into my new artist studio at the Zhou B Art Center in Kansas City. I am very excited to be part of a group of about 40 talented artists that are making this art center a vibrant place to create. Stop by to say hello if you are in the 18th and Vine neighborhood.

This is the first entry of a new project of mine where I plan to paint the essence of songs that I appreciate. This painting captures the meaning of the song “Truckin” by the Grateful Dead. The truck is cruising through the different cities of the song so you will see iconic buildings from Chicago, Detroit, New York, Dallas, and Houston. There is also an iconic sign from Buffalo and the street sign for Bourbon St.

One of my favorite places to play is in the Teton Mountain Range which perfectly frames this iconic barn located on Mormon Row outside of Jackson Hole. I painted this in acrylic on an 18"x18"wood panel.

I did a 3D tempera/chalk art mural for Science City at Union Station in Kansas City this past week. It was a lot of fun to create, but nowhere near the fun of watching Aiden and Addy play with the artwork after it was completed.

I painted the Block Fountain in front of Union Station as part of a contest. Back in 1996, my company restored the windows at Union Station. It was much easier to paint the windows in my studio rather than the original units.

I finished my acrylic painting of one of Claes Oldenburg's Shuttlecocks at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. This one was fun to work on since I have always been a fan of Oldenburg's work.

Last night I donated one of my paintings to the Kansas City Artist Coalition's 42nd Annual Art Auction. My painting was of this amazing concrete bridge in Kansas City that was built in 1928. The KCS bridge is an amazing engineering marvel that stands today because of outstanding design and quality construction.

I’m currently working on painting one of the shuttlecocks at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and captured this picture during one of my morning runs. I was first exposed to the shuttlecocks’ artist, Claes Oldenburg, back when I was only 12 years old when my older sister wrote a paper about the artist. Later, in 1979, my father’s construction company erected Oldenburg’s 53-foot Caruso Umbrella in front of the Des Moines Civic Center. I have always been fascinated with how Oldenburg became internationally renowned for creating huge public works featuring small everyday objects. His work with items such as a tube of lipstick, clothes pins, ice cream cones, screws, and a spoon with a cherry are absolutely delightful. I’m also captivated by Oldenburg’s practice of drawing attention to items often overlooked by enlarging them to a scale that’s impossible to overlook. I hope to someday discover a creative path that similarly distinguishes my work.

I had a wonderful time participating in the Sarasota Chalk Festival over the weekend. It was fun meeting new artists and running into old friends. I also enjoyed exploring the beauty of flowers with a sunflower mural.
