Dear friends,
We took the title of our show, The Wandering, from a letter that Franz Schubert, our composer, wrote to Franz Schober, his friend and (perhaps) lover, on July 3rd, 1822:
“In my dream, my father took us to a feast. My brothers had a good time there, but I was terribly sad. My father came up to me and commanded that I enjoy the exquisite food. But, I couldn’t. My father, angry, banished me. I turned my steps away, and, with a heart overflowing with love for those who scorned me, I wandered into a distant land...
For long, long years, I sang songs. When I wanted to sing about love, it turned to pain. When I wanted to sing of pain, it turned to love. Thus, love and pain divided me.”
Our show is about this journey: the decision to leave what is conventional in search for something wondrous, beautiful, and strange, even when that journey is painful or arduous.
This is the journey Franz took in 1822. It’s also the journey that the main character goes on in the film. And, it is the journey of this project.
We hope you, our audience, will experience this sense of exploration, discovery, and transformation as well.
Thank you for wandering there with us.
With gratitude,
