Evoking the peaceful beauty of nature, Falling Water #3 by New York City-based artist, Melita Osheowitz explores the delicate interplay between the natural world, movement and abstraction. Layers of gesso and oil paint are built up on hand-shaped spirals of canvas cascading in vertical gestures, creating a tactile sense of grasses, reeds, trees or rainfall over a lush green landscape.

Muted greens, olive tones, earthy ochres, and luminous passages of cream hues move rhythmically across the three dimensional surface. The varying gradients of oil brushstrokes create a sense of depth and transparency, giving the artwork a feeling of organic growth and continual movement.

Both meditative and energetic, the painting invites the viewer to look beyond literal representation and experience the landscape as a sensation–light filtering through foliage, wind moving through tall grasses and nature continually shifting before the eye. The substantial scale further immerses the viewer in this atmospheric enviroment.

Melita Osheowitz's use of layered materials and expressive vertical mark-making creates a compelling balance between control and spontaneity, offering a gorgeous work of art for the home that feels both grounded in the natural world and distinctly contemporary.

"Velma, Charlotte, and Sibley" of The Mill Dogs' Revenge series by Best Friends Animal Society co-founder and Artist, Cyrus Mejía.

Mill Dogs' Revenge Series // "Living Well is The Best Revenge."

🐾 💛 Velma– Permanent head tilt from years in a cage breeding for the market.
Now, safe as a princess.

🐾 💜 Charlotte– Stiff, shy and standoffish from life in a cage.
Now learning to trust.

🐾 🩷 Sibley– Skittish and frightened from years of rough treatment.
Now learning to love car rides!

Artist's Statement. Mill Dogs' Revenge. Cyrus Mejía.

Dogs rescued from puppy mills have physical as well as emotional trauma. Their toes are often spread out and splayed from standing on wire mesh cage bottoms. Some of the dogs have physical or neurological damage from life confined in a cage. Because what human contact they have known has been harsh and cruel, these dogs are often timid and afraid of people. Often they behave more like a frightened wild animal than "man's best friend."

If there is a message in my art it is always placed a few layers deep. My desire is to have the viewer drawn in to the work before discovering meaning. These paintings have an unfinished look, the dog in the picture is left as a charcoal drawing because the dogs themselves are a "work in progress." When thinking about creating this series of paintings I remembered a saying by English poet, George Herbert; "Living well is the best revenge." Living well, after a life in a small wire cage, would be standing on plushy furniture! Dogs captive in commercial breeding facilities (aka puppy mills) don't live well by any stretch of imagination. They are confined in small cages sometimes no more than six inches larger than the dog on all sides! Female dogs are kept pregnant and "producing" constantly. When they can no longer make babies they are discarded. These places are in business for one reason, to make a profit by selling puppies to pet stores and on the internet. Puppy mill dogs are victim of the "worst" practices of this business; greed, cruelty and neglect.

Mill Dogs' Revenge Series by Cyrus Mejía is currently on display at Raven's Heart Gallery. OPEN DAILY: 11am-7pm. These extra special oil paintings are currently available in the gallery and online: https://ravensheartgallery.com/Cyrus-Mej%C3%ADa-c50357192
