My Process

June 28, 2022

Pastel sketches are an integral part of my art making practice. These four small pieces are one step away from a larger, perhaps very much larger, oil painting.

Typically I’ll work out compositional and color issues in pastel where I can work very quickly and directly. Honestly, this is often where the unbridled creativity happens. Maybe that’s why I love these pastels so much! What do you think?

Back to Pastel

June 7, 2022

Feels good to have a pastel in hand again! I’ve been happily working away in oil to keep up with demand for my work. But it has been a long hiatus. Too long.

I think my work in general leans toward a decidedly intuitive approach to art making. But with the directness of pastel it becomes even more so. Sometimes it feels as though my oil paintings are trying to “catch up” with my pastels. I’m enthralled with this warm manganese violet color that turned up!

Ain't Too Proud To Beg

April 12, 2022

Our youngest daughter, Sarsten, is in the thick of a Go Fund Me campaign to finance the music video for her upcoming EP release.

I thought I’d resort to bribery and see if some of you, my loyal collectors, might give her a hand! Here’s the deal: you make a donation of $500 or more and you get to choose one of my pastel sketches, 10x10" framed size. Or make a donation of $100 or more and choose a pastel, 5x7" framed size, as my thank you.

Free Art! Hey, it’s the kind of thing a Dad does.

Just click on the donate button, make your contribution, and drop us an email letting us know the amount you gave. We’ll email you the pastels you can choose from. You pick out your favorite and we’ll get your new pastel coming your way!

Surprise Baby is releasing our freshman EP this summer and need your help! In preparation for the release we are shooting a music video at the end of April to accompany the debut single, “Poison the Well.” We are releasing this EP independently and are asking for $8,000 to fund the production and post production costs needed to make the music video a reality.

Please consider donating $10, $25, $50, or any amount that you can. Thank you for taking the time to consider our campaign. We are so very grateful for your contribution and appreciate your continued support.

Small Is Beautiful!

December 21, 2021

I’m framing pastel sketches. These are about six by six inches. Colorful statements in miniature.

Honestly, I can’t get wonderfully spontaneous interactions of color like this when I’m working in oil. And the beautifully loose and dynamic effect is almost effortless in pastel. It’s not for lack of practice! I do have some experience with oil. I got my ten thousand hours in about a half century ago! Here’s what I know, (profound insight on the way) a stick makes a different kind of mark than a brush.
