Kalamazoo’s Basic Comfort makes alternative pop built on deep grooves, meticulous arrangements, and reflective songwriting. Their music moves through indie, soul, R&B, synth-pop, and jazz without settling into any one of them.

Silent But Deadly is a Kalamazoo-based ensemble of professional musicians bringing the silent film orchestra into the present with newly composed music, film history, and plenty of audience participation.

Chicago’s Dom Rabalais (Real Dominic) is the project of Dominic Rabalais, making restless electronic punk where samples, synths, guitar, and pop hooks are constantly being cut apart and pushed back together. There’s plenty of noise in it, but a sharp sense of rhythm and melody underneath. KJHK called the live show “an odd yet exciting whirlwind.”

Brooklyn’s 최동준 call themselves “NYC SLAMGAZE,” taking the scale and blur of shoegaze and giving it considerably more weight. Huge guitars and industrial textures meet new-wave rhythms and melodies that stay surprisingly clear inside all that distortion.

Kalamazoo’s Stalagmite /\ /\ /\ work from a darker post-punk and new-wave vocabulary, building songs around repetition, atmosphere, and tightly locked rhythms. In their words, “moody atmospheres with infectious grooves.”

Sick Gazelle is Bruce Lamont, Eric Block, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, and Douglas McCombs of Tortoise.

Their new album Veld pushes the band’s improvised beginnings into more defined song forms: Shelley and McCombs driving a rhythm section beneath Lamont’s saxophone and vocals and Block’s guitar, electronics and ambient textures. The result moves between cinematic tension, dubby grooves, noise, melody and open-ended experimentation.

THE KEENER FAMILY

Chicago-born and now based in Kalamazoo, The Keener Family is the work of songwriter Christopher Keener, whose music draws classic country storytelling into heavy atmosphere, distortion, reverb and dreamlike abstraction.

An early force in what came to be known as bootgaze, the band makes music built on contrasts: achingly tender yet unflinchingly direct, expansive yet deeply personal. The Chicago Reader described their sound as “rich melodies float[ing] languorously atop warm guitars and strings heavy with reverb.” with “Each song carrying the weight of an epic poem.”

At its core, The Keener Family is the work of Christopher Keener, a songwriter whose music doesn’t just tell stories but inhabits them. Each release marks a deeper descent into personal and sonic exploration, from the cavernous echoes of heartbreak to the quiet resolve of self-discovery. This is music built on contrasts: achingly tender yet unflinchingly direct, expansive yet deeply personal, rooted in country but dissolving into dreamlike abstraction.

On August 14, rising artists Tekeo and King Baztard Yitz are bringing their crews together at Glow Hall for a one-night-only celebration of their new albums. Both projects dropped in June, just two days apart, and are packed with features from each other.

INFINITY II: PLATNUMB is Tekeo’s 11-song follow-up to his 2021 album Infinity. Tekeo appears on four songs from Yitz’s 13-song It’s Time To Be Okay, including the title track. Yitz appears on “Alone” and “Handcuffs” from INFINITY II: PLATNUMB.

K.O.G. has recorded with both Tekeo and Yitz, including on Beyond Infinity’s “COAST II COAST.”

The Renaissance is the Kalamazoo trio of Ashley J., Sherdizzil, and J.B. Their six-song Work In Progress EP was released in April and includes Tekeo on “Whether Ya Like It or Nah.”
