In 2020 just before the pandemic, I made a pact with myself to only do fiber arts work that expressed internal emotion or was relevant to a message I was trying to communicate. It had to be personal. Basically, no more production work - with the exception for class samples or step-outs. In this pact, I also committed to not underselling my work ever again. About a year later as I was unearthing items from the Great Studio Moves of 2019 and 2020, I found a piece of fabric, the twin of whom I set on fire in a timing experiment gone wrong in 2018. 2017 through 2019 were very discombobulating years, and at the time of this experiment, setting fabric on fire accidentally was par for the course. I didn't think then "wow this will be a great base for a piece." I thought "I am a du***ss who does dumb things" and chucked it away to hide.
When this fabric was unearthed, it delighted me. It showed me how far away from Discombobulation City I'd travelled. I started just "doing things" on this fabric as the spirit moved me. I took it to Ireland with me and stitched a lot to distract myself from anxiety of the driving. (Bravo to my sister who drove and did a marvellous job). The designs on the piece represent many different facets of 2017 through 2019, the experiment, the emotion, the confusion.
This year I entered this piece in the Regional Arts Exhibit as part of Festival Grand Rapids and to my delight and surprise it was selected to be exhibited. Two weeks later, I had an email that this piece won a monetary award. I am beyond thrilled and excited and surprised.
You can see this piece at Grand Valley Artists from now through June 30. LowellArts is hosting award winners at their gallery from July 8 through August 13 and you can see this piece there as well. Thank you to the organizers and volunteers who help make this possible.
