Using Square's payment system, artists can set their own pricing and retain 90% of their sales (before taxes and processing fees). Fans aren't required to have a premium subscription to preview or purchase the music. The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) union is suing Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group for the artists' share of their settlements with AI music generators Suno and Udio. AFM says that the labels "protected their own interests and created a significant source of new revenue" with settlements and licenses, but haven't compensated the artists whose music was copied, used to train and develop AI models, and is now being commercially exploited. Both labels say they're protecting arts rights and interests during the rise of AI.
