This week in our K Phil member spotlight, we are pleased to introduce Lucretia Stinson!
Lucretia first started playing flute in 2000 at Comstock Public Schools. Her grandmother taught her how to play piano when she was 3 which is where her love of music began. She played piano and flute in her childhood church, Allen Chapel AME for the youth choir. She also played in the pit orchestra for multiple plays including "The Music Man" during high school. She played flute in Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra in 2006-2007. That was the year they had auditions for the new director and she reports that Andrew definitely was her and her fellow students' top pick!
She played in the KJSO Alumni Orchestra in 2009. For the last 14 years, she has played flute and piano at her church Mt Zion Baptist Church, and recorded with the church album in 2022. She also played in pit orchestra for Portage Central High School's "The Little Mermaid" in 2023.
Lucretia was drawn to Kalamazoo Philharmonia because it's a great group with challenging and exciting repertoire, she knew a few long time members of the group who enjoy it, and she really missed playing in orchestra.
She studied flute performance Associate in Arts at Grand Rapids Community College, graduated from Western Michigan University with a bachelor's in science (original concentration Music Therapy). She played in Wind Ensemble, orchestra, flute choir at GRCC. She also played in Concert Band and WMU Bronco Marching Band at WMU. She was also a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a music fraternity at WMU.
Music is a huge part of her identity and she is very proud to share her gifts with the community. And we are so grateful to her for sharing her gifts with us!
