Under the Kona Moon is excited to welcome Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang and Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau for this month's performance!
Kumu Michael Pili Pang studied hula under the tutelage of Hula Masters’ Maiki Aiu Lake and Mae Kamāmalu Klein, and received the title of ʻOlapa in 1979, and Kumu Hula in 1986 through the traditional ʻuniki ceremony. In 1987, he became the first recipient of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Master Apprenticeship Grant to study chanting with Master Chanter Pualani Kanakaʻole Kanahele. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Secondary Education from the University of Puget Sound and is the only kumu hula to earn a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Dance from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. He has presented lectures, demonstrations, and concerts at universities and colleges in Hawai'i, North America, Canada, and Asia. In 2005, he was appointed Executive Director by Mayor Mufi Hannemann to the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts and continues to serve on a number of boards as a cultural consultant. Currently, Michael focuses his time at Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau, which he founded in 1986, teaching 10 hula classes a week. He is also the Executive Director of Mu'olaulani, the non-profit corporation supporting the endeavors of Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau.
Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau was established in 1986, in the rural town of Waimea on the Island of Hawaiʻi, by Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang, the hālau maintains the philosophy and the hula ku'i style of dance associated with hula master Maiki Aiu Lake. Since 1994, Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau has performed in over 40 cities across the United States, Canada, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. In 2002, the hālau was relocated to the Island of Oʻahu and is located in the lower Punahou, Pawaʻa area. The school conducts 13 classes a week teaching children ages 5 to kupuna. The hālau accepts students three times a year, January, June and September. Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau is supported by its non-profit company Muʻolaulani – fostering programs to promote the art of hula.
