Tonight's the night!

Photographer Merridy Magnusson is our August Featured Artist, and her new feature wall celebrates more than three decades of photographing Juneau.

Many people know Merridy for her stunning images of the Mendenhall Glacier and the northern lights, but this collection also reflects the incredible archive she's built over her 33 years as a member of the Juneau Artists Gallery. From the changing face of the glacier to some of Juneau's most memorable moments, her photographs capture the beauty of this place we call home.

Stop by and meet Merridy during First Friday tonight from 4:30–8:00 PM.

Kelsey creates her illustrations from a home studio, usually with her studio companion Abby nearby 🐶

When asked what people don't usually get to see behind the scenes, she said:

"Usually people see nothing! I'm so tight on time between being a full-time mother. When I do squeeze in my business hours, the lighting is dim or I'm working so fast I can't spend time setting up my camera."

One question we love asking our featured artists is what they find most rewarding about making art. Kelsey's answer was simple:

"Starting my initial work or original work is almost as exciting as when I finish the piece. It might be the most exciting part if I really think about it."

Kelsey's featured wall will be up for just a few more days, but her illustrations are always part of the Juneau Artists Gallery. Stop in the next time you're downtown and say hello.

The Juneau Artists Gallery is an artist-owned co-op in Downtown Juneau, made up of 20+ local artists.

Everything in the gallery is created by artists who live and work here, and 90% of each sale goes directly back to them.

You'll find us inside the Senate Building on Franklin Street, just a short walk from the cruise ship docks.

Stop in and take a look around if you're downtown.

Juneau, you don't want to miss these gorgeous new illustrations from our featured artist, Kelsey Hoke Martin.

Kelsey is presenting "Foraging Fable," a 3 illustration series depicting mother animals with their babies.

Here's what Kelsey has to say about the inspiration behind the series:

"I was drawn to this theme after I attended BOW (Becoming an Outdoors Woman-Sponsored by The Alaska Department of Fish and Game) over mothers day weekend this year. I learned so much, including foraging and canning knowledge. The images for this series just kept popping up in my brain while i was at camp and as soon as I got home from my weekend retreat, I put pen to paper."

We’re an artist-owned co-op in Downtown Juneau, filled with local art, handmade jewelry, prints, photography, and all kinds of things made by Juneau artists.

Since 90% of every sale goes directly to the artist, it’s the kind of place that feels good to spend your money at. You get something you love, and the person who made it gets supported.

Just don’t expect to leave with only one thing.

One of the greatest joys of being an Alaska artist is watching someone connect with a painting. Today, “CAWFEE” found a wonderful new home, and seeing the smile on the new owner’s face was every bit as rewarding as creating the piece itself. Thank you for supporting local artists and the Juneau Artists Gallery. Moments like these remind us why we love being artists.

Shawna (Spiral Studio) has been a little obsessed with glass lately, and it shows. There’s always something new coming out of the kiln, and usually another batch already in progress right behind it.

A lot of what she’s doing now started with her neighbor Nell, who brought her into the studio and taught her the basics, and from there it kind of took off into what you see now.

Here’s how she put it:

“If I could spend 48 hours each day here, I would. I'm obsessed with the glass lately – these glass votive candle holders specifically. I have the kiln set up right now for them and I've made, like, five different batches, and with every batch I tell myself this is the last one.”

And just as much as the making, she really values the people she gets to share it with.

“I like the co-op because you have the ability to be in person with people… to see what people like and what they vibe on in person is everything… I just really want to emphasize that anybody can be an artist.”

She’s our featured artist this month at the Juneau Artists Gallery, and it's definitely worth a stop in to check out her work!

Happy Father's Day from all 21 of us at the Juneau Artists Gallery.

We're thinking about the dads, grandpas, father figures, and mentors who taught us things over the years. How to make things. How to solve problems. How to keep going when something wasn't working.

Some of those lessons found their way into our artwork. A lot of them just became part of who we are.

We're grateful for all of it.
