Father’s Day is one of those holidays where it can be hard to know what to get... So we asked Gene to pick out a few things he’d recommend from around the gallery.

He kept it simple and thoughtful.

Here’s what he chose:

* Romeo at Mendenhall Lake by Rick Kauzlarich
* Father’s Day Card by Nicole Steger
* Pump House Original Cyanotype by Jonathan Swinton
* Lighthouse Pen by Al Tingley

If you’re looking for a Father’s Day gift in Downtown Juneau, stop by the gallery and take a look around. There’s always something in here that feels just right.

From studio to gallery wall. “Mendenhall Bear” making its journey through the Alaska State Capitol and into the Juneau Artists Gallery. Always a special feeling seeing a new piece find its place.

In the spring, when Alaska's state flower (the forget-me-nots) start blooming around Juneau, Shawna of Spiral Studio brings them into her studio and starts working with them.

They get dried, trimmed with tiny scissors, and set into resin, adjusted over and over until everything feels right.

Here’s how she described it:

“In the springtime, when the forget-me-nots bloom, I'll cut them, and I'll bring them into the studio to dry them. Once they’re dry, I'll cut them with these cutesy little scissors, lay them all flat and then add silica… Then, once I set these into the first part of the resin, I have to adjust them over and over and over until that resin sets.”

And then every once in a while, something like this happens:

“I had a little girl come into the restaurant where I work who was wearing a pair of these earrings… and that in itself makes anything and everything else worthwhile.”

Shawna is our featured artist this month at the Juneau Artists Gallery. If you haven’t seen her work yet, it’s worth a look.

If you've spent any time around Shawna Barkey of Spiral Studio, you've probably noticed two things pretty quickly: she's always creating something, and she's almost always smiling.

For First Friday, we asked Shawna a little about the inspiration behind her latest collection. Here's what she had to say:

"Having always been an artist and not knowing my true media, silver and glass have become my adult Play-Doh! Creating is in my soul and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to share it through art and jewelry! Dichroic glass has become a recent favorite as well as anything that sparkles!"

Come by on Friday and say hello to Shawna. She'll be here with her featured collection, and we'd love to show you what she's been working on.

This gallery is full of mothers, daughters, sons, grandparents, great-grandparents, chosen family, and people carrying forward the care they were shown by others.

Some of us learned how to make things with our hands from our moms. Some learned how to keep going, how to pay attention, or how to care for the people around us. And some are now passing those same things on to their own kids or others in their lives.

This year, we thought it would be nice to share a few photos of some of the people behind the artwork, and the women who helped shape them.

So, from all 22 of us at the gallery, we are wishing all the moms and mother figures out there a very Happy Mother's Day. Thank you for caring, thank you for showing up, and thank you for all the small things you do that matter.
